Second Best Coffee Shop in the City Offering Salsa Lessons

Whah? 14U which I always thought was called FourteenU Coffee shop, located at the corner of 14th and U, is actually called one for U coffee shop which I guess makes more sense. But anyway I just noticed that they now offer Salsa lessons which just seems really bizarre to me. It is a very small space, but I guess that’s cool. Maybe next month they’ll have free bonsai tree sculpting lessons. I mean that would make just as much sense, no? Has anyone taken the Salsa lessons? I’m still nursing a nagging breakdancing injury but I’ll have to check it out when I’ve recovered…

The Genius Behind Dunkin Donuts

You see, not only is the coffee spectacular but Dunkin Donuts also has the best cups and certainly the most superior lids for any carry out coffee.
The genius behind the Dunkin Donuts lid is its locking mechanism which easily opens and closes for smooth drinking. I am still stunned that there is only one Dunkin Donuts serving the Petworth/Columbia Heights/U Street neighborhoods.

Java & Cream Coffee

After getting scolded for not visiting North Petworth, I decided to take a walk up to the Java & Cream coffee house located around 5500 Georgia Avenue. I am happy to report that it is a fantastic independently owned coffee house. I had the opportunity to briefly chat with the owner who told me he has plans to open 4 more in the area over the coming years. The coffee was delicious and cheaper than Starbucks. I paid $2.75 for a large latte. The owner also told me that in the future there will be some live music, which I’ll post when it happens. There is a great seating area here as well, so if you live in North Petworth enjoy this fantastic coffee shop. For those who live further south, there are plans to open another store near the Petworth Metro in about two years time.

A reader sent me in this wonderful experience at the recently opened D and D on 14th and Girard.

“Hi PoP: just wanted to let you know that, as a fellow fan of DD coffee, I was thrilled to know that DD had opened in the neighborhood, and I stopped by there today on my way home. I’d had a busy morning, and I’d forgotten that I didn’t have my wallet with me in my purse. The manager was behind the counter waiting for my order, and when I realized I didn’t have money on me, he told me not to worry about it and asked what I’d like to have! I’ll be headed back today to take him what I owe him. I wanted to let you know what a generous and smart (!) businessman is running the new Columbia Heights DD. Life is good.”

Another Shout Out to Mayorga

I briefly mentioned Mayorga coffee located in the Tivoli on Park Rd and 14th St but I don’t think it has received enough attention. This place is ridiculously good. You can kind of see from this picture it has vaulted ceilings on the ground floor. And this place is huge. There is a lounge adjacent to the ordering area with wifi and big flat screen tv. Plus upstairs it has a super cool bar. This place is honestly insane. It looks so modest from the outside but they have truly taken advantage of the Tivoli’s architectural features. I talk a lot about good vibes and atmospheres of restaurants/bars. At Mayorga as soon as you enter the doors you take a big sigh of relief it is so pleasant. If you haven’t checked it out yet, it is an absolute must!

Neat Neighborhood Find

Thanks to a few readers who have alerted me to Nani Kafe on Harvard on Sherman a bit south of Petworth. The proprietors were fantastic and they make a mean latte. If you are reading this from the Park View neighborhood I believe you have found your go to Coffee shop. I asked the owners how they chose their location and they replied that this neighborhood was in need of a good coffee shop. This cafe has definitely filled a gap on Sherman Road. Best of luck to them.
