“Dear PoPville,

Lo and behold another Christmas is set to arrive any day now, the usual folks I know are going to receive gifts. This year, again, my nephew, my sister’s only child is asking for expensive games and gaming equipment. I find myself, whenever I’m around my sister and nephew, constantly seeing my nephew glued to his phone or some TV and phone video gaming situation. My sister is a single parent who has not much money for any outside study courses but what would the answer be given my nephew is a latch-key kid until she gets home from work at 6:00-6:30 daily. Any suggestions to change this behaviour? My nephew’s daily how are you; response; fine, got any homework; no, I did it. Nothing, is becoming too stale for words there has to be a better answer….thanks.”

Ed. Note: Gentrification is the root of all urban evil is the most intellectually lazy argument one can make. Life and cities are full of nuance that cannot be captured by a single word. Complex problems require complex solutions and you do a disservice by oversimplifying the problem. It’s much more difficult than coming up with catchy slogans. Of course, camp was so much better last summer, right?

Thanks to a reader for sending. H Street Organic Market closed back in August of ’15. Kiddie University’s website says:

“Dear PoPville,

For the past 3 seasons, my son has taken a soccer class at the Raymond Rec Center through DPR. He is now 4 and a half, and I was ready to sign him up for the fall. However, DPR appears to be offering no soccer classes for 3 and 4 year olds this fall (in the past there were several at different locations). I have emailed, called, and Tweeted DPR to find out why they are not serving this age group, but, unsurprisingly, I have gotten no response. I thought I would write and see if anyone else has any information about when or if they will offer classes for 3s and 4s again.”
