From a press release:
“DC Bike Party, a monthly party ride around DC will celebrate it’s two year anniversary this Wednesday, July 9th. The group ride, which averages between 500-800 participants each month, will ride through DC in their “birthday suits”– balloons, streamers, party hats and noisemakers– all to celebrate two years in bike partying. Riders are encouraged to add songs to the DC Bike Party collaborative playlist to hear their favorite tracks through our mobile jukebox, Sound Bike DC.
The group, departing from Dupont Circle at 8pm sharp, will set out to complete an Approximately 8-mile ride, visiting some of the city’s major landmarks and attractions before ending with a celebration at Bardo Brewpub at 1200 Bladensburg Road NE where local ska band, The Originators, will play a free set.
A map of the complete route will be available at DCBikeParty.com 24 hours before the ride. Riders are welcome to join or depart the group at any point—many riders use Capital Bikeshare.
Everyone is welcome to attend or participate.

“Any polls on how many injured from biking on H St NE streetcar tracks?
people are still getting hurt, even with those lanes [G and I Street contraflow lanes]. I see abt 2 injuries/month. Something isn’t working.”
Do you think there needs to be better signage encouraging use of the new G and I Street, NE contraflow lanes? And of course no need to answer the poll if you don’t bike around DC.

“I know you posted about the first attack, but another woman was attacked the same day!”
The report from WTOP:
“Chanel Marshall, 30, tells WTOP that she was walking from work to the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro Station about 5 p.m. when she was attacked from behind by a man who had followed her along the trail.”
Ed. Note: We’ve previously discussed safety issues and concerns on the MBT here.

“Dear PoPville,
Attached is a picture of the 15th street bike lane at U street Sunday afternoon. I just don’t understand why it is allowed for this construction truck to block the bike lane, especially at such a busy intersection. Its dangerous. I live at nearby; I drive, I walk and I bike in the area. A few weeks back you posted a picture of a car blocking a bike lane — presumably those people would be ticketed and towed if left for days; why is this vehicle allowed to do so essentially without penalty? This willful disregard for the few safe paths is one of the reasons people who ride bikes feel unsafe in the city. And don’t get me started on the terrible light synchronization of the 15th street bike lane — you basically hit every red light riding at a medium pace…”

“Dear PoPville,
Monday night I was driving south on Georgia Avenue with some friends when we witnessed something disturbing: a man (25?) speeding down the hill on a bicycle, steering the bike with his left hand and holding a baby in his right. By baby I mean maybe 18 months? Definitely not old enough to talk. Neither were wearing helmets.
We watched the guy run TWO red lights (and nearly miss and SUV turning onto Georgia at the first) before hopping on Florida and speeding away.
First of all–this has to be illegal, right? Child endangerment?
Secondly, I see lots of parents biking with kids, and it always makes me nervous (and I say that as a fellow city biker myself). Most parents do the all the rights things by biking in bike lanes, strapping their kids in seats, and making sure everyone has a helmet. But there are still so many things you can’t control for.
I’m curious to know what your readers think: Is it always a bad idea to bike on city streets with kids? And when you see something so clearly reckless as we did last night, should you bother reporting it to the police? Were any laws actually broken (besides the running of red lights)?
And I forgot the most important thing: it was after dark and he had no reflectors or lights on his bike!”

Noticed these signs all over Logan Circle this weekend:

Well, they’re still pretty new…

“found this “art” blocking the Penn Ave cycle track this a.m. Who thought this was a good idea?”
Leftover from yesterday’s Pride festival?

I finally got to use the free air dispenser on 13th Street (around Kenyon) and it worked like a charm.
