From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is exploring the potential to allow dockless bikeshare options in the District of Columbia and invites the public to comment on the idea. Several private dockless bikeshare companies have expressed interest in operating in the District. As a result, DDOT is exploring a demonstration period with one or more of those companies to test this new approach.

Feedback on the demonstration period’s structure can be submitted via email to [email protected] through Friday, September 15. There will be additional opportunities to provide input throughout the demonstration period.

DDOT welcomes community feedback on the demonstration period’s terms, conditions and evaluation criteria. Specifically, the agency is interested in feedback on: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have noticed a marked uptick in aggressive bike commuters over the past year or so. I walk from the Columbia Heights area down to downtown as part of my normal commute. Recently, more and more bikers are not obeying stop signs or traffic lights and I have witnessed multiple first person and third person close collisions with bikers due to the fact that they are not obeying proper traffic laws. Furthermore, generally their response is one of consternation, often times screaming profanities at the innocent pedestrians (with small children around). (more…)

14th and I Street, NW July 26th

“Dear PoPville,

I just saw this article, Cyclist Hit By Bus at 14th and I Street, NW.  I was the cyclist hit by the bus and I’m looking for witnesses – I was wondering if anyone was a witness, and would be willing to make a statement regarding what happened.”

Ed. Note: If you are a witness you can email me at [email protected] and I’ll put you in touch with the cyclist hit.

“Dear PoPville,

On Thursday morning (the 17th) at about 8:40am I was on my bike in Mount Pleasant on Irving Street just before (west of) 16th Street when I was hit by a car. It was a silver late-model smallish Ford, like an Escort or Focus, with Maryland plates. I actually was dragged about 15 feet before he sped off down 16th. Luckily I escaped with just a fractured collarbone and a bunch of scrapes to my leg and helmet… my bike didn’t fare as well.

Did anybody see this? I stupidly left the scene running to try and get his plate number (you can do anything on adrenalin). I should have just stayed there and talked to witnesses. If you saw this, please get in contact with me! I’ve filed a police report, but they don’t have much to go on at this point.

Thanks everyone!”

From a press release:

“Motivate, the operator of Capital Bikeshare, is unveiling a new mobile app to help residents and visitors in the Washington, D.C. area navigate the area and unlock access to the system, the company announced today. Users and new riders can download the mobile app on iPhone and Android, and it will provide riders with new features to connect them to the system in real time.

“The new Capital Bikeshare mobile app will open up new possibilities for CaBi riders– providing a convenient and quick way to find a bike or a dock, keep track of exercise, and make it easier to know that you’ve properly docked your bike,” said Capital Bikeshare General Manager Eric Gilliland. “It’s never been easier to give Capital Bikeshare a try, and we look forward to providing our riders a more seamless experience than ever before.”

The system’s new mobile app allows members to purchase a variety of passes or an annual or 30-day membership, and allows current Capital Bikeshare members to log-in to access their ride statistics, including tracking calories burned and miles traveled. It also lets riders check for available bikes and docks in real-time.

Features of the new mobile app include: (more…)
