“A USPS van was parked the wrong way in the bikelane on I St, SW forcing cars over the double yellow and bikes into the street. The Fed Ex truck parked in the bike lane on N. Carolina is just a bonus. There was a large vacant parking space next to the Fed Ex truck.”

“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced a proposed rulemaking, in support of Mayor Bowser’s Vision Zero initiative, that will prohibit stopping, standing, parking, passenger loading and unloading, and other obstructions of bicycle lanes.
DDOT’s rulemaking, drafted in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department and the Department of For Hire Vehicles, is designed to eliminate and clearly prohibit behaviors that endanger cyclists traveling in the District’s bike lane network.
“As the District continues to embrace multimodal transportation, we have to make sure that our regulations and practices protect all users of the roadway,” said DDOT Director, Jeff Marootian. “These rules reinforce the Bowser administration’s commitment to Vision Zero and eliminating traffic fatalities in the District.”

“FRESHFARM needs your help! We have an important update to share about the FRESHFARM Dupont Circle Farmers Market. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is exploring the creation of a north-south protected bike lane to connect the Dupont Circle neighborhood with Foggy Bottom and the National Mall. This week, the Dupont Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC 2B) made a motion to recommend that the protected bike lane be constructed along 20th Street NW, which would travel directly through the market. While FRESHFARM strongly supports more protected bike lanes throughout the city, we are very concerned about the impacts the proposed bike lane will have on market operations. A protected bike lane along 20th Street could reduce the footprint of the Dupont Circle Farmers Market by as much as 60% and create serious safety hazards for shoppers, farmers and producers, as well as cyclists. “Dear PoPville,
I’ve been scooting to work for 6 months now and usually get there via the bike lane on M street. I have been nearly hit 3 times this week alone because trucks are consistently parking (illegally) at the end of a protected bike lane IN THE MERGING AREA where cars traveling west-bound on M need to get in the right turn lane to get onto 24th street. Update from Capital Bikeshare on yesterday’s glitch:
“We know that you rely on Capital Bikeshare to get around the DC metro area, and we’re grateful to have you as a member of our community. We wanted to update you on an issue that has left about 10% of stations temporarily out of service.
These stations became disconnected from the network yesterday, meaning users could not use the Capital Bikeshare app or kiosk to unlock a bike when visiting one of these stations. As soon as we became aware of this issue, we began working on a solution and have been in the process of fixing it. However, it is taking us longer than we expected to bring all of the stations back on-line and we apologize that these stations remain out of service. (more…)
“Investigators with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic crash that occurred on Saturday, January 5, 2019, in the 1800 block of Montana Avenue, Northeast.
According to the preliminary investigation, at approximately 4:53 pm, the victim was traveling southbound on his bicycle at the listed location. The victim was struck by a vehicle that was traveling on Montana Avenue, Northeast. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle did not remain on scene.
The vehicle of interest was captured by a nearby surveillance camera and can be seen in this video above.

“Starting next week, Metro customers will be able to bring their bikes with them on the train – at any time – as Metro ends a longstanding restriction that prohibited bicycles during rush hours.
The policy change, which takes effect Monday, is expected to make Metrorail a more attractive travel option for reverse commuters (i.e. customers traveling outbound in the morning and inbound in the evening) who want to take their bike to travel between the rail station and their workplace.
Metro reviewed its policy and determined that it could respond to requests from the bicycling community by ending the rush-hour bike restriction without significant negative effects. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I am following up on the bike incident that happened some time ago. I heard back from the officer investigating the case. He told me that, because it was not caught on camera, the US attorney’s office is not following through with the case.
I was told my only option is civil court, which is somewhat of a bummer. I am not seeking money, but justice. I dislike that the assailant is a DC security guard with a badge they can flash and, more troubling, a deadly weapon. Since civil court is used to seek damages, compensation is really my only avenue, and I did not seek medical attention after the incident to document any sort of physical harm. I was wondering if any of your readers might have suggestions for a lawyer that would take their fee from the damages only if the case was won. Thanks.”
