“Looking for some community wisdom on biking to work”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m considering getting a bike for a few reasons (some pandemic related) but am trying to figure out if it’s feasible to ride to work when work resumes–I don’t want to invest in one and then let it sit in storage if things ever get back to normal. One possible route would take me down Rock Creek Park Trail between Porter St. and Georgetown (or between Calvert and Georgetown, depending on what I find out), and from all my research it’s hard to decipher whether or not this part of the trail is a safe, reliable route for someone on a hybrid/commuter bike during weekday commute hours (i.e. when Beach Drive isn’t blocked to cars). Three New “Car Free Lanes” Coming at the end of July

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced plans to install Car Free Lanes in high-traffic corridors that will support improved efficiency in bus travel and create space for bicyclists.

“We know that dedicated bus lanes make public transportation more efficient and reliable. As we continue reimagining public spaces, these lanes will help us encourage bus and bicycle travel, reduce traffic, and build a greener DC,” said Mayor Bowser.

Nate writes us last night: “Hey PoPville — can you help me give a shout-out to the two very kind women who helped after I crashed my bike in pothole on 11th & Mass Ave NW this morning? Was a bloody mess but they helped me get out of the road and clean myself up until I could get a ride home.

I can’t remember their names (I was in shock and bleeding everywhere; I think one said Mara), but they were an incredible example of the very good neighbors Washingtonians are. Thankful for their help during an already stressful time. And DPW please fix that killer hole.”

“DDOT Begins Construction on 14th Street NW Bus Lane Improvement Project”

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced the start of bus lane construction on 14th Street NW between Euclid and Newton Streets NW, commencing a year-long project to improve bus performance and safety.

“We are excited to launch such important work in enhancing bus transit in the Columbia Heights corridor,” said District Director Jeff Marootian. “DDOT recognizes how essential this will be for area residents and it also exemplifies Mayor Bowser’s commitment to improving bus travel speeds and reliability across the District.”

DDOT expects the enhanced bus lane will improve performance of the DC Circulator Woodley Park-Adams Morgan route and Metrobus lines 52, 54, and 59. (more…)

Not All Heroes Wear Capes – Picking Up Glass from the Bike Lane edition

I saw this kind man who was collecting glass on the 15th St bike lane by flashlight last night. He’s a cyclist and said it was out of self interest, but I honestly thought it was a super kind neighborly thing to do! Also as a dog owner, I super appreciate it! Thank you so much friendly glass guy–I hope you didn’t cut your hands!”
