“Dear PoPville,
i didn’t get to thank a very kind stranger for intervening on my behalf. i (a female) was biking by myself around 11:30 pm on friday night, headed north on 6th st in southeast. as I was approaching the intersection of 6th and penn, there was a man in the street that was shouting at cars. i stopped a good way back from the intersection so as not to interact with him as i waited for the light to turn green. unfortunately for me, he saw me and rushed towards me yelling nasty things and getting incredibly and uncomfortably close. he was blocking my bike and screaming in my face and i did not know how i was going to get away from him. “Dear PoPville,
The crash occurred on Thursday, April 13th at about 2:45pm slightly north of the corner of 36th and Garrison St. NW. Unfortunately, he was in a very bad state (and still is- broken ribs, fractured skull, stitches, and extensive road rash), so he doesn’t remember what happened except hearing a car revving up right behind him immediately beforehand.
He was on his bike (not sure of type or color); he’s an avid cyclist, so likely a road bike. And he’s a white male in his early 60s. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Alas, I’ve decided to buy a new bike and am looking for where I can donate my old one. I’ve heard about Gearin’ Up Bicycles, but have had some issues getting ahold of them by phone and email. Does anyone know what the latest is with them? Alternatively, does anyone else know where else I can donate my old bike? Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,
PSA: I was riding my bike on the Metropolitan Branch Trail this afternoon when a group of teenage boys thought it would be hilarious to scream profanities and jump in front of my bike. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Is this legal? The property management company for our building (we rent someone’s condo) has without warning implemented a $100 fee to use the bike storage room. The room is now controlled by fob access, and fobs won’t work until you pay the $100/bike. What’s the legality of the company just imposing a charge like this without warning? Anyone else had to deal with this?”

“Dear PoPville,
Watch out if you’re a bicyclist in Columbia Heights, apparently this was the best way to get past rush hour traffic. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I was walking near the Zoo Loop Trail yesterday at 5:45pm, and the gates on both ends were wide open, with the trail getting plenty of use. Were the hours quietly extended” or did they just forget to close it?
Update from a reader:
“The trail is open until 7pm during the zoo’s summer hours. They are able to keep the trail area staffed and open for an hour after they close according to the zoo’s Director.” (more…)
