Sorry for the terrible cell phone photo but this was way too cool of a sight not to post (they gave me permission to take the photo). So these folks had set up tiki torches and brought a tv and comfortable chairs on their front lawn to watch the olympics. It really was a great sign. So are you guys super psyched about the olympics? I have to be honest, it really doesn’t do much for me. Maybe if they showed my favorite Summer olympics sport (ping pong) I’d feel differently. If you are excited what are your favorite sports to watch?

Looking like a strong finalist contender: “This is Arty. She’s a little over 2 years old and lives in Columbia Heights.”

Unfortunately, Submissions are closed no more entries will be accepted at this time. Entries 20 and 21 after the jump. (more…)

The flier says: “LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!!! Zoned C2A, mixed use. Business on 1 level and live/rent out others. Blocks from Howard University, Petworth metro, Columbia Heights metro, a lot of upcoming retails everywhere. Hurry hurry hurry. .. .make an offer!!! Also for lease $3,500/month.” More details found here. The location is 2915 Georgia Ave and the asking price is $549,999. I think that may be the most insane asking price I’ve ever encountered for a package like this. Would a “mixed use” zoning increase the value substantially? Is this asking price pure fantasy?

A reader writes: “This was Saturday at 2:45 and is the fourth this week, though that’s through the grapevine. We waited 30 minutes to get back in. WSC users were livid.”

Are people noticing lots of fire alarms going off at DC USA? Anyone know if it is the alarm malfunctioning or ruffians pulling the alarm?

The City Paper tipped me off to this fire but they were thin on details so I did some investigating on my own. I cruised by yesterday and talked to a bunch of neighbors to see if I could piece together what happened. There are some facts and some speculation. First the facts. This fire took place late Friday evening (technically Saturday morning at around 2:30am). It took the fire department over an hour to get in because they had to file away the metal bars that surround the store. The store is pretty much a total loss.

Speculation. It appears that the owners lease the store so it wouldn’t make sense that the owners started it on their own. There has been trouble in this store in the past (most recently someone was chased inside and shot around a year and a half ago). So there was some speculation that it could have been set by some unsavory characters. That doesn’t seem likely as an eyewitness told me it appeared the fire was coming from the inside and not the outside. Additionally I’m told there were a number of old electrical coolers that could have malfunctioned so it seem quite possible it was simply an electrical fire.

I’m thankful that noone was injured. I’m supposed to get some photos of the fire in action and I’ll post when I get them. If you have any photos of the fire in action please send to me. I hope the store was properly insured so that they can rebuild soon. I guess I’m a little thin on details too…

Thanks to the many readers who sent me the news. After only a few months being open we learned that Meridian restaurant closed back in early June. For the folks up in North Country I’m happy to let you know about Brightwood Bistro located at 5832 Georgia Ave. I stopped by and was able to grab a menu and talk to some folks doing prep work. First of all the new Bistro is opening up on Tuesday. Most of the decor will stay the same. The new executive chef is named Michael Walters. Call 202-545-5015 for reservations. Currently hours will be 5-11pm. A sample from the menu:

Shrimp Noodle Soup $8, Brightwood Mussels $7, Rittenhouse wings $10, The Brightwood Burger $15, Missouri Avenue Hotdog $8, (all sandwiches come with garlic fries), Pan roasted rockfish $18, The georgia avenue ribeye $24, Its Shrimp N Grits $19 (There are a number of other choices as well). I like the local names but I’m a little concerned that the price point may be too high.

Hard to say without sampling the goods but do you guys think the Bistro will be successful at this location when Meridian was unable? What do you think they’ll need to do to be successful?

I loves me some coffee and I guess people know that now. I received the above photo in my inbox without any explanation. I just laughed. Well done.
