I received the following press release for a proposal to open up the underground space around Dupont Circle as an art space:

“WASHINGTON, DC‐‐ The Arts Coalition for Dupont Underground announces a campaign to re‐open the Dupont Underground as an exhibition and event space for the arts community. A consortium of galleries and arts organizations, the Arts Coalition for Dupont Underground, is seeking a long‐term lease from the city and funding from a variety of sources to re‐condition the old station and its tunnels as an exciting new addition to a constellation of galleries in the District. Uniquely sized and centrally located, the new space is large enough to accommodate up to 3000 people and will provide a critical new social space to catalyze efforts to revive the Dupont Circle area and put the District back on the cultural map of the nation.”

The concept image, above, looks good, yeah?

Thanks to a reader for sending the link. The article starts off:

“Washington diners often complain of a lack of good neighborhood joints. Brightwood Bistro (5832 Georgia Ave. NW, 202-545-5014) aims to be part of the solution.

The restaurant replaced the short-lived Meridian in August. The ambitious bistro is a venture of five friends, all of whom grew up in the Brightwood neighborhood. “We’ve lived in this area our whole lives and we’ve never had a nice sit-down restaurant. You had to go to Georgetown or downtown,” says Daymon Anderson, general manager and co-owner. “So when the opportunity presented itself to us, we jumped on it.”

Nice! I can’t stand those internet juke boxes. I get a bit too overwhelmed with all the choices. I think it’s far more fun to have a nicely stocked proper juke box like this. I always tend to play music that I don’t own on jukes like this one.

In other good LGL news. They now also have a new single malt scotch – OBan a 14 year old single malt. Plus they have a new bourbon – Blanton’s single barrel bourbon. Plus they have a new Irish whiskey, sadly not Powers, Clontarf which is supposedly a bit better than Jamesons. And finally they have a new seasonal beer by Post Road which is a Pumpkin Ale.

But back to the juke box.  Which do you prefer the classic ones like this or the internet ones?

For those that don’t like painted brick, what do you think about this white one? I think it looks super fresh. Pretty cool house too. How often do you think they have to paint it to keep it so white?

How about “coolest neighbor in PoPville”? Snap a photo of a neighbor you admire and send a couple of lines of text about them. I think we may be able to get some really interesting entries from some long time residents. Send the entries to [email protected] and if I get enough entries we’ll make a contest of it.

This building is located on the 1400 block of Chapin Street. Clearly it has a cool roof deck but do you think the style of the building is cool?

I seem to recall some folks recommended the Afghan Grill, located at 2309 Calvert Street in Woodley Park, as a great restaurant. I just noticed that they now have a nice outdoor eating area. We still have a few more weeks to take advantage of it.

I also noticed that there was a new (to me) cafe located next door. Has anyone checked out the Cafe De Paris located at 2311 Calvert Street. Are the crepes any good? Where can you get good crepes in the city?

This house is located at 1453 W Street. The flier says:

“Incredible townhouse in the perfect location. 2 Units: Top unit 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, high ceilings, fireplace. Lower unit 1 bedroom, 1 bath perfect for renting and extra income. House overall in decent shape but needs a little TLC. Property sold “As Is”. Investor opportunity or new home buyers with a dream of making a home of their own.”

More details can be found here.

Now I’m a bit confused, this location seems good, and the house looks pretty sweet. So unless this house needs tons of “TLC” I’d say $599,900 is a great deal. What do you think, good deal or not?
