“Since you often talk about Columbia Heights in your blog, i thought you might find it interesting that the 1951 version of “The day the earth stood still” takes place in Columbia Heights.

The spacemen stays at a bed and breakfast. When the army approached this address, the spacemen escaped in a taxi. once the army realized their mistake, the officer got on the radio and said that the spacemen was in a taxi heading north on 14th st from Harvard. Also there is a 14th st nw street sign so its the right quadrant. unfortunately, 14th st ends in a ‘T” w/ Harvard so its fake, but still cool.”

Now I’m going to have to go rent it!  What do you think is the best DC based film?

This is on the side of a house (frack I forget the street perhaps Swann) near Lauriol Plaza off 18th Street. I had once shown other sculptures nearby but somehow missed this one. Someone help me out – which street is this on?

Sorry for the slightly crooked photo. I was really struck by the glass in this door.

I thought that bay window was pretty unusual. But I totally dig it.

From a reader:

“Our City Film Festival is back again! The Our City Film Festival will bring together people from all Washington, D.C neighborhoods and cultures to celebrate “our city’s” history, culture and distinctiveness by viewing narratives and documentaries about D.C. Local filmmakers will have the opportunity to show their work in a unique and open-minded environment.

Kick off party on Saturday, February 7th at Bar Louie in Gallery Place! The festival will take place on Sunday, February 8th at Busboys and Poets (2021 14 St, NW). About 10 films will be screened through out the day and a Q&A with winning directors will be lead after each screening by various judges. All judges for the festival are media professionals, filmmakers, or D.C. “celebs”.Get tickets in advance, last year’s festival sold out fast! More info here.”

Sadly this is a topic we’ve been discussing far too frequently lately. So here’s an opportunity to have a “vigorous dialogue with key government representatives”. Thanks to the many readers for sending the following info:

At-Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson, Chairman of the Council’s Committee on Public Safety & the Judiciary, has scheduled a forum to address neighbors’ concerns about public safety issues. The primary purpose of the meeting is to encourage questions and facilitate vigorous dialogue between neighbors and key government representatives. Along with Councilmember Mendelson, representatives from the Metropolitan Police Department as well as the US Attorney’s Office will be on hand to add their expertise to the discussion.

The forum will take place on Thursday, February 5th, from 7-8:30 pm. It will be held at the Patrol Services and School Support Bureau Community Room (801 Shepherd Street, NW – the ROC building).

Wow, this one blew me away. It’s super cool how it focuses on one and blurs out the crowd. It was submitted by Chris S.

Ed. Note: While most folks have tagged their photos with “popobamaweekcontest” in flickr I just wanted to let folks know that I’ve created a PoPville flickr pool here. So please join up and feel free to submit photos of the beautiful life whenever you’d like.

Back in September a similar house a few doors down sold very quickly for around $380,000. This home is asking $425,000. This particular home does seem to be getting a complete renovation but do you think it can sell for more than it’s neighbor did back in September?

I’ve been pretty curious about Pines of Florence located at 2100 Connecticut Ave because it looks so out of place for a restaurant. It is surrounded by apartment buildings and in fact looks like it is in the lobby of one. But the reviewers on Yelp were very complimentary. I’m a huge fan of Italian food so I’d love to add another to my regular stomping grounds. The menu says “Uncomplicated Southern Italian Food at a Reasonable Price”. So what do you guys think – any fans out there?
