From ALERT DC:

The National Weather Service is predicting between 4 and 8” of snow to fall in and around the District beginning late Sunday afternoon. The heaviest snows are expected to fall between 7pm and midnight. District snow crews treated all roads last night as the first of two forecasted storms moved through the area.

Mayor Adrian Fenty announced this morning that a snow emergency will be in effect beginning at 4pm this afternoon. “It is important that our crews have access to the roads from curb-to-curb in order to plow the snow,” said Mayor Fenty. “This is one of the first plow events we have had this season, and we want to ensure we are able to maintain clear and safe roadways as we move into Monday morning.”

During a declared snow emergency vehicles are not allowed to park on routes identified by the red and white “Snow Emergency Route” signs. Once a snow emergency is delcared, vehicles remaining on these routes will be ticketed and towed and charged a $250 fine. A map and listing of snow emergency routes may be found on line at www.ddot.dc.gov. Click on “Snow Plan – Snow and Ice Control.”

Also, travelers should be aware taxi cab fares can be increased to 25% during a declared snow emergency. There is a button on the meters that once pushed will automatically add the increase. Passengers may ask for a receipt to see the total charge. Continues after the jump. (more…)

The Barnett-Aden Collection looks great! From the Informer:

The Barnett-Aden Collection dates back to the 1920’s. If was founded by James Herring, founder of the Howard University Department of Art, and Alonzo Aden, curator of the University’s Gallery of Art, both of whom were collectors of art. In 1943, they opened an art gallery in their Washington, D.C. home, and named it the Barnett-Aden Gallery.

At a time when most African American artists could not exhibit in mainstream museums and galleries, the Barnett-Aden Gallery provided exhibit space for artists to showcase their talents. Artists like John Robinson, Archibald Motley, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, and many others exhibited in the gallery.

The collection is being shown at the Hemphill Fine Arts Gallery located at 1515 14th Street, NW. You can view the exhibit on their Web site here. Exhibit is on display until March 7th.

I thought this was a really interesting example of two styles mixing. To a certain degree it reminded me of the buildings we judged on Mass Ave. a couple weeks ago. This example is from 16th Street, I didn’t catch which embassy this (my weakness in flag identification is well documented). But the building itself is super cool. If you look to the right hand side you’ll notice a more modern styled addition. I think it came out pretty well. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

This home is located at 1421 Varnum Street, NW:

The flier says:

“Elegant open floor plan, renovation using traditional details and contemporory style. Bright Open Kitchen & Dinning area plus bonus room. Full basement with quarter bath & door to rear garden, fenced yard and 1 car garage. Solid wood panel doors and glass transomes. Stunning hardwood floors and extensive moldings. Located near Rock Creek Park.”

More info and photos found here.

Just a few doors down you’ll find another home for sale at 1421 Varnum Street, NW.

The flier says:

“”ESTATE SALE” VERY LIVEABLE SOUTH FACING WIDE & DEEP WARDMAN STYLED ROW HOUSE, FRENCH DOORS, HARDWOOD FLOORS, 2 DENS, RECREATION ROOM W/ BAR, TRANSOMS, 2.5 BATHS, 2 CAR PARKING, NEWER WINDOWS, UPDATED ELECTRICAL, BOILER & HOT WATER HEATER, W/ D, WALK TO COFFEE HOUSE “HIGHLANDS” & ROCK CREEK PARK!!! APPROX> 1.2 MILES TO THE ZOO”

More info and photos for this home found here.

The first home looks pretty sweet and is on the market for $589,000. The second home actually has one more half bath than the renovated home and is listed for $485,000. So what do you think of the homes themselves? Is one of them better priced given their conditions? If you were in the market which would you go for?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday.  Anything good happen this week?

The folks at CSNA have some development news for the development coming to 14th and S Streets, NW.

The DC Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) approved revised plans as presented by the JBG Companies for their mixed-use project at 1800-1818 14th Street, NW (14th and S Streets, NW) on the site of the old Whitman-Walker clinic.

JBG presented revised plans at the February 2009 CSNA meeting, which incorporated comments received from CSNA, HPRB, ANC 2B, Dupont Circle Conservancy, and surrounding neighbors. After the presentation, CSNA voted to support the revised plan as presented. CSNA then shared their approval and support of the project with HPRB.

JBG is the same group developing the hotel at 13th and U Streets, NW that we discussed earlier in the week.

More info and renderings can be found here. How do you think this proposed building looks?

Yesterday’s crime discussion got me kind of blue so I wanted to lighten up the FQoTD a bit. I was trying to remember my favorite vacation. It came down to Oktoberfest in Munich or Running with the Bulls in Pamplona. Both were definitely amazing but running with the bulls was pretty freaking scary. Even though the festival itself was amazing, the actually running with the bulls is terrifying. And anyone who tells you differently is either insane or lying. I’m slightly insane and had fortified myself with many vodka and a tang like orange flavored drinks but still when then cannon went off and the bulls caught up to you it was pretty rough. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I did it and the adreline rush was fun but it can’t match Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest on the other hand was pure joy every waking minute. At Oktoberfest I went with a great group of people who I nearly instantly got separated from. So I spent tons of time hanging out with random Spanish, Italians, Germans and folks from all over the world. For some reason I remember there was a lot of singing John Denver songs and inexplicably, to me, everyone knew the words as well as many, many toasts. Half the time we couldn’t even speak the same language but it was no less fun.

So for a fun FQoTD – what has been your favorite trip (abroad or in the states)?
