North Sea Restaurant is located at 2479 18th Street, NW (near the McDonalds). I have to say, I never realized this was a proper restaurant. I always thought it was just take out. But it looks pretty nice.

Their Web site says:

“Our restaurant offers a wide array of authentic fine Chinese dishes, ranging from tranditional Szechuan and Hunan dishes such as , Seasame Chicken, General Tso’s Chicken, Sauteed Mix Vegetable to new style entrees such as Pad Thai, Chicken Chow Mein, Pepper Steak and Kung Po Shrimp.”

You can see the menu here. So any fans out there for delivery or dining in?

From the Mt. P Listserv:

“On Wednesday, June 3, 2009, DC Public Library held the second community meeting since showing the public preliminary design plans on March 26, 2009 for an expansion to the rear of the current Mount Pleasant Library building. There were more than forty people in attendance.

Although the public was expecting to discuss at least four design schemes, DCPL showed the already discussed plan to renovate within the existing walls and a plan they are calling Scheme F. DCPL staff concluded that the renovation plan would just not suit their “building program” so in essence the audience was given one choice, Scheme F — there was no compromise on this.

The architect, Henry Myerberg and Associates, presented Scheme F using a slideshow of images depicting the floor layouts and only a couple slides showing the real-world renditions of the expansion. You can find these here >> http://tinyurl.com/dcpl-mtpl-june3-plans

The full-expansion would increase the size of the library more than 4,500 square feet and extend back from the current building to the library property line. This would put a three-story expansion less than twenty feet from the apartment buildings adjacent and behind the library.

Community comments ranged the spectrum. Some audience members gave the new plans enthusiastic support despite seeing these details for the very first time. Others were visibly frustrated and upset, especially about not being given much choice and the lack of meaningful discussion around fire safety concerns.

So what do you think of the plans? You can also send feedback to The District Dynamos (who sent the original email) at

My Dad likes to call these experiences life’s lessons. And well this is a big one. You see this is what I was talking about when I’ve come to be a bit envious of certain GDoN condos or homes that are totally renovated or brand new. While I love the details of my 1920 home, there is always something to fix. So a couple of years ago I needed a gutter replaced and went with a very cheap option. I saw some guys doing work on another house on the block and asked them if they could fix my gutter. Big mistake. It was super cheap for a reason. The gutter basically failed after a year’s service. Here’s what I learned – when a gutter fails bad enough the water just pours down the back of your house. When the water pours down the back of your house it puddles at the base and gets absorbed into the walls. Long story short, it actually decayed the brick. The freaking brick! Insane.

All that pink stuff at the bottom is brick dust. Then it turns out that termites like moisture. So there was some old termite damage when I first bought the house and nothing active but I got totally freaked out and just got an insane treatment that was not cheap. Now I have to get the gutter fixed and the bricks re-pointed. Basically you wake up one morning and all of a sudden you’re out a lot of dough. All because I thought I was getting a deal on a gutter. Ugh. Thankfully the Budweiser 30 can packs were on sale at Giant…

Anyone else experience long term pain on a short term fix?

I have a well known fondness for tree stumps for reasons that are still not exactly clear to me. Anyway, I found this one particularly cool. It looks like they tried to carve it up with a chainsaw but eventually gave up.

Despite my love of tree stumps I did have one that was obstructing a gate that I had to remove. I tried everything to kill it and was unsuccessful for quite a long time. A neighbor told me to drill a whole in it and pour salt down it. I’m not sure if that did the trick but like a year after the salt treatment it finally died.

This week’s selection is for Father’s Day coming up. The owner is Luis Gomez who got it done at Paradise Tattoo on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. The tattoo is a portrait of his father who was a surgeon in the Colombian Army.

Ed. Note: I’m embarrassed to admit that when I saw it first out of the corner of my eye I thought it was of Nehru. But this is very cool too…

Social is the restaurant opening up at 14th and Meridian. From time to time folks email me asking about job openings so I thought I’d post this from craigslist:

“Social” seeks an experienced and enthusiastic staff for an exciting new concept driven restaurant located at 14th Street and Meridian Place NW. Hiring for ALL HOURLY POSITIONS. Open interviews will be held on Tuesday, June 9th-Thursday, June 11th, @ 2:00pm-6:00pm”

Click the craigslist hyperlink above if you want to send a resume in.

And a bit further south on 14th Street, (above Miss Pixie’s), I received an email from Mid City Caffe saying their opening has been delayed. They originally announced in a press release a June 14th opening but they’re not going to make it. A new date has not yet been selected but I was told I’ll be notified when they have one.

I know I just ranted about mosquitos but this pond has moving water and goldfish! I particularly liked the back part. I got nothing but respect for those who can maintain bonsai trees… Actually I’m not sure those are proper bonsai trees but it still looks pretty sweet:

There were some pretty dope ones by Sheridan Circle.

I guess the whole front is pretty amazing:

Last week when I put a best spot for a morning cup of coffee post up a commenter said the whole house was awesome. Indeed it is another beauty from the 100 block of U Street in the Bloomingdale neighborhood. I really can’t figure out why I didn’t take photos of the whole house before. I suspect my mom was not 100% truthful when she said I was never dropped on my head as a baby…

But you can see the details are spectacular:
