The summer thunderstorms have arrived with a vengeance! Check out yesterday afternoon’s massive clouds rolling across the hood, moments before it unleashed its torrents.

While I love this visceral display of Nature’s power, I’m not always enjoying the results. The rain is great, but too much, too fast, like yesterday mornings deluge, has flattened my garden. My toppled cucumbers and tomatoes are minor compared to the impact on others – I saw branches down, and I am sure we lost a tree.

Still, I hope we can all see the beautiful life through the rain. Personally, I love summer thunderstorms, a reminder of the energy still beyond man’s grasp and a natural air conditioner that cools the whole city in one burst.

Anyone else have any trouble due to the storm?

“Hello PoP,

Over the past few weeks my friends and I have noticed that the Ghana Cafe (on 18th street in Adams Morgan) is going through a transformation. First they took down the sign, now they have gutted the whole building, installed new windows on all three floors and put up new internal walls. Could you work your magic and find out if it’s coming back as a shiny new Ghana Cafe or if it’s gonna be another Jumbo Slice?”

I took a look this weekend and the permits out front said that it was slated to become a retail or wholesale store. I think it would be great to add some retail to the mix of 18th Street. Anyone have any idea what type of retail this may become? What do you think would do well in this spot?

“Dear PoP,

My wife and I recently bought a condo in CH. Its in a converted rowhouse on the end of the block. On the side of the building that isn’t shared with the next rowhouse, there is a small alley about half the length of the rowhouse where we keep our trashcans. The alley is non-functional as it doesn’t connect to the street, but only to the bigger alley in the back. Technically this space is owned by DC, so we can’t really do any improvements on it (re-pave, etc). A friend of mine told me that our condo association should petition to annex the property. Is this possible? Do you or some of your readers have any advice on how to proceed? I didn’t really see anything on dc.gov about property annexation.”

Wow, that would be awesome. Ok, readers is it possible to annex land from the city? Any advice?

This may be another tough one but it seemed rather odd to me. Your caption in the comments and winner announced Friday. If you have captions that you like best be sure to say so in the comments so it can help me selecting the winner.

This is a perenial favorite of mine located outside the big apartment building on Quincy off of Georgia Ave. So don’t say that all who rent don’t have pride in their yards…
