Ten Miles Square and Pink Line Project present
Fixation
at
Industry Gallery
Saturday, November 7, 6 to 10 p.m.
1358-60 Florida Avenue NE, Second Floor

“Join Ten Miles Square and the Pink Line Project with the work of nine local photographers for the second annual Fixation exhibit.

These photographers each create a narrative with a short series of images, differentiating the stereotypical image of our Nation’s Capital from the people actually living inside it. Their photographs inspect our city’s individual subcultures and the people who thrive in them, whether it’s the intense rock convulsions of serious air guitar competitors or the eager characters at the local Renaissance festival. Some create their own scenes by simply coming together as bystanders, while others transit separately in search of the same something. What these images all have in common is a fixation on subculture carved out inside the story of this city.

Featured photographers: Nicole Aguirre, Karon Flage, Angela Kleis, Drew McDermott, Amit Mehta, Pat Padua, Jay Westcott, Aziz Yazdani, and Joshua Yospyn.

Performances:
6-9 PM Music by Yoko K!

From their Web site:

FotoWeek DC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2008 to celebrate the power of photography. Our first annual weeklong festival brought over 20,000 visitors to the Nation’s Capital, galvanizing the Washington, DC community. Washington is unique in the photographic world, consisting as it does not only of a nexus of talented photographers, but also its far-ranging collections of photography. From national institutions like the Smithsonian to edgy galleries on 14th Street, the image is everywhere, and FotoWeek DC was created in part to pay tribute to this. The inaugural competitions attracted an astounding amount of high caliber work, and a photographic light show on the walls of the Nation’s monuments was, well, electrifying.

FotoWeek DC isn’t just about seven days or one city, however. Exhibitions continue throughout the year, including our most recent exhibition, Fotobama, at the Newseum. The educational, community building and informational exchange platforms we provide for photographers and photo enthusiasts have expanded to an international level, which is why, in 2009, our awards competition has gone global. Finally, as the first organization to recognize the need to create a photographic forum that engages people of all ages, races, and economic means, FotoWeek DC hopes to foster both grassroots initiatives and public/private partnerships to publicize global issues and encourage positive social change.

You can see the full schedule of events here. And Heather Goss from DCist makes her recommendations to the Washington Post here. Should be a great time!

“Dear PoP,

I have a question that I am always faced with and maybe you would be interested in posting on your blog for thoughts – I usually end up responsible for finding the place to host my work’s holiday party, as well as other work events (going away parties, retirements, etc.). I work at a nonprofit with about 40 people, and it is really hard to find a cool place that is inexpensive to host such events. Since you’re hosting your party at Wonderland, that might a good option. Any other thoughts?”

I agree Wonderland is a great spot. You could also check with the folks at Red Derby (14th and Quincy) who are always very accommodating. Where would you guys recommend?

The flier says:

“Located on a tree-lined street just 2 blocks from Logan Circle, this 1870’s row home has been tastefully renovated to include modern conveniences while maintaining its historic charm. The home is located in the 14th Street Historic District and includes original features such as random-width heart pine floors, curved hallway walls, vintage mantels, pocket doors and six-panel floor to ceiling windows in the living room.

The home boasts a true Chef’s kitchen with 30″ Professional Dual-Fuel Range and 36″ vent hood. The kitchen opens up to a two-story family room with skylights that fill the home with light. Entertain guests in the formal dining room or step outside to enjoy the large private patio.

The master suite includes a fireplace and attached bathroom with a whirlpool tub and double vanities. The upper level also includes a second bedroom and full bath. A den overlooks the family room and could be used as a 3rd bedroom or office.

The off-street parking space and separate laundry/storage room create the final touch of urban convenience.”

More info found here and a virtual tour found here.

The owner writes:

“We *really* love the house, but we need more space and are planning to buy a larger house with an in-law suite with my (retired) dad…we’re in the process of trying to work out a deal on an old GDON (from this past summer) in Columbia Heights (we bought our current house in 2001…since then, it seems we’ve been priced out of Logan and will be moving uptown a bit).”

Well that is a good looking house. What do you guys think of the house? Does $799,900 sounds reasonable?

Last week I revisited a property just north of Dunbar High School. This one is a short distance south of Dunbar, on a quiet one way street that is tucked just off of New Jersey Avenue, seconds (if you hit the lights right) from the third street tunnel. I was sent a heads up about this property closing by one of my own clients, who settled on a property on the same block a couple of weeks ago, for which he is planning to do extensive renovation. Continues after the jump. (more…)

Back in April I gave some scuttlebutt mentioning a sports bar possibly coming to Irving St. just west of 14th in the retail of the Highland Apartments.

So it’s definitely coming! It will be called something with the word Lou’s in it as a tribute to the owner’s father. So for the name would you prefer – Sweet Lou’s Bar and Grill, Lou’s Bar and Grill, Lou’s Sports Bar or something else (remember Lou has to be mentioned)? And for the entertainment – there will be lots of tvs to watch sporting events. And it is a pretty big spot around 4,000 square feet. So for other entertainment options would you rather have a pool table, shuffleboard table, air hockey, or something else? It can’t be all of them so which would be best?

Thanks to everyone who helped celebrate at Wonderland. And thanks to all the great readers and tipsters who help keep the site up to date on DC’s neighborhoods. Based on some feedback you can see some slight upgrades to the site on Friday. Based on feedback I have made it easier to find specific neighborhoods and within neighborhoods – restaurants, real estate, architecture and crime posts. I will likely be making a few tweaks to it but I hope you find it more easily navigable. You’ll also notice that you can now rate particular posts and see specific comment threads in a more coherent way.

But again, thanks to all who have helped PoP reach this anniversary.
