Suggestion for a frivolous Friday question of the day. “What’s the Worst Sports Team Name in the USA?” I thought it was the Washington Wizards until Richmond just named its new minor league baseball team the “Flying Squirrels”.

I agree, it’s been a while since we had a fun FQoTD. I really enjoyed reading about people’s first cassette, CD, and concert that they went to. But this is a good question too. I’ve always thought the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz was the most ridiculous sports mascot/name. But can you think of any worse than the Flying Squirrels? I’ve always thought that Clerks of Cardozo High School was an odd name…

I had the opportunity to stop by Maddy’s in the old Timberlakes spot located at 1726 Connecticut Ave, NW. I was able to speak one of the owners, Gaynor Jablonski. Jablonski is also owner of the Ugly Mug located at 723 8th St SE. Jablonski’s business partner is Dale Shields and Maddy’s is named after Shields’ mother. The spot has been open for about a month. Jablonski described the place as having many elements of the Ugly Mug but slightly higher end. I found it to be a very comfortable spot.

You can see the menu here and the beer and wine list here.

Incidentally the Ugly Mug and Maddy’s are showing a big fight on Sat. for no cover.

I’ve always wanted to ride in one of these planes. Looks awesome! The reader writes:

“My dad and I went on a fishing trip to Alaska this summer. We took a float plane across cook inlet to an uninhabited lake, which is where this picture was taken. The fishing was great!!”

I’ve noticed a lot of these blue roses pop up around town. Anyone know what “close the school of Americas” is about? On a side note I think the glue that dripped down the side actually looks kinda cool.

Every now and then I gotta throw a re-PoP up. Cause I was walking past this one on S Street just east of 18th and it could very well be the coolest rowhouse in DC. Right?

Thanks to IMGoph for the heads up. About a month ago Garden District moved to a new location across the street from its former location to 1740 14th St., NW. Well, 14th & You is reporting:

“Last week, the Garden District–the 14th Street nursery and plant lover’s paradise–filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leaving it’s future on 14th Street cloudy.”

They say the spot will remain open (including selling Christmas Trees) through December but it is unclear what will happen after that. Yikes!
