From the school:

“ABC Public Charter School at 209 Upshur St., N.W., in Petworth, is seeking library shelving and new to gently used books that would be appropriate for children of middle school age (6-8th grade). Please contact Arie Baker, the school’s director of operations and development, at 202-882-6301 or abaker (at) abcpcs.org.”

Not sure if you can see all the detail up top but I’m also always a sucker for the huge windows.

My sources are telling me that our beloved Temperance Hall has been sold to the owners of our beloved Wonderland Ballroom. Crazy! I’m still digesting the news but I’m thinking things will probably stay the same. My source did not know if they were keeping the staff but my guess is they probably will. General Manager Dan Searing has done a fantastic job and of course Scott and the new bartender Eric have been stellar. It seems to me that they won’t want to fix what’s not broken. That’s my hope anyway. So what do you guys think, is this good news, bad news, or everything will stay the same anyway so it doesn’t really matter?

UPDATE: Temperance Hall to Change Name to Looking Glass Lounge
DCist spoke to the owners of Wonderland who confirmed the name change. They also said that the place “will have a slightly different feel.” Now I’m starting to get worried.

Pictured above is Shaka King, 43, the owner of Shaka King New York, located at 825 Upshur St., NW. Perhaps you are like me and have walked by this store dozens of times. It is well worth your while to stop in the next time you are walking by. This store is an anchor of Upshur St., and has been open for 7 years. Mr. King describes his clothing as “contemporary sportswear that has a metropolitan feel with a European edge.” His explained that what makes the clothing accessible is that “it has more of an American feel with a slight European aesthetic.” I asked Mr. King where he got his inspiration. He replied, “it comes from all over but it started with old black and white films and today I get the inspiration from the fabric itself.” Prices range from $75-$800.

Mr. King had been living in New York City for 25 years and had been doing a lot of trunk shows in DC and his customers kept asking him when he was going to open up a store? Lucky for us none of the 15 property owners King reached out to returned his calls. Fortunately a friend of his knew of this particular property on Upshur St. and the rest as they say is history. It is possible that a new fashion corridor may open up elsewhere in the city that is heavily recruiting Mr. King, nevertheless, he hopes to keep his Upshur St. Boutique open for years to come as it is his flagship store.

King told me that many of his customers try to keep his existence a secret so that they can be the only ones sporting the Shaka King style. Well the secret is out now… More photos after the jump. (more…)

If I were of the proper persuasion this is the wreath I would get.  Or maybe one with avacodos.  Yeah avacodos are awesome.

Some of these incidents have to be legitimate, no?  These scammers are really going to make it difficult when a proper solicitation occurs…  So how do you separate legitimate requests from scams?

Dear PoP,
Yesterday afternoon a woman knocked on my door.  She did not identify herself or her address but pointed vaguely saying she lived 5 houses down.  She said a relative of someone in the neighborhood was diagnosed with diabetes and she showed me a dog-eared high school photo of a teenager.  She said she was collecting for a fund for him.  I politely said I was not going to contribute.

I called 311 and told dispatch about it and asked that they drive down the street to let the woman know that her ruse made me think she was casing the area for future mayhem.  I do not know if they did.

I don’t know why but I really love this rooster. Perhaps it is in homage to little Yerry Seinfeld…

Dear Prince of Petworth,

I am writing on behalf of the Higher Achievement Program, an organization that has been challenging Washington, DC’s brightest middle school students to achieve higher academic standards for over 30 years. Our mission is to develop critical academic habits, behaviors, and attitudes in DC’s underserved yet motivated students to improve grades, standardized test scores, and attendance: all factors that foster acceptance into top high school programs. You previously posted some information about our organization on your web site on National Service Day.

I wanted to extend an invitation to you and your readers to come to our Ward 4 Achievement Center for our Annual Spelling Bee. On Tuesday, December 11th, our 5th through 8th grade scholars will challenge their academic limits in front of their peers and community members through an intense Spelling Bee competition. Winners of this Spelling Bee will go on to compete against their Higher Achievement peers at the Region-Wide Spelling Bee held the next week.

Here are the details:

  • When: December 11, 2007 from 6:00-8:00 pm
  • Where: ABC Public Charter School, 209 Upshur St., NW
  • RSVP: Mike Di Marco; 202-375-7721; [email protected]

“I am writing today, because i am discouraged by the list of school closings,

Bruce Monroe was on that list and is the best school I have seen in dc!

Yes the building could use some work, but the programs here are awesome to put it in the lease

This school just received a relationship with The Rosenbaum foundation for aSingapore Math pilot program Bringing the worlds foremost math expert on board.

They are about to with with A.I.R and their math group and the Federal Government to implement this.

The staffs morale is hurting and I am so discouraged with this system.

Why should we stay in it.

Do we care about our kids they will be lost and destroyed at Parkview.

Please reconsider this

From the heart of a teacher who cares probably too much

enrollment here is up, test scores are up, help us!!!!!!!!!!!

we have great leadership and our parrents are comming to me and want to go charter after this.

thanks”
