I know we have seen these horses before but I am incapable of passing these horses without taking a picture. This was taken Saturday on 14th Street near Girard. I just can’t get used to seeing horses in Columbia Heights. But I think it is awesome. I saw many kids going up to pet the horses. I think they make a nice bridge between the community and MPD.

The two things that I wish my house had were some sweet stained glass numbers and a nice vestibule with that fresh tiling that goes half way up. I’m still looking for vestibule pictures, if you have one hook a PoP up! Please.

And perhaps the most unusual door decoration I’ve ever encountered. A cow. That is just wild. I don’t think it can get any weirder than this. Maybe a whale would be weirder?

I saw this sign on a building on 14th Street in Columbia Heights. Kind of bizarre I think. What do you think you have to do to get free rent? You think this is a deal like first months rent free or something like this? It’s good marketing, I think, it really got my attention.

Ok, a number of people have recently emailed me about the strip club The House on Georgia Ave. near Otis and Newton.  There is a lot of concern about the new charter school opening up right near by the strip club.   In addition people who are thinking of moving nearby are very concerned about living near a strip club.  So the first question is:  Is there any chance that the strip club will be closed due to the charter school opening?  Secondly, how much of a factor is it in moving to one of the nearby streets?  I had a buddy of mine who lived on Newton about a half a block away and neither he nor his wife encountered any drunk/rowdy patrons.  So, basically, is The House pretty self contained or is it a menace to the neighborhood?

Well, I’m a huge Wilco fan and always try to catch them at the 9:30 club. They usually play a ferocious show there. So this morning a buddy of mine and I both tried to get tickets. And unbelievably we were both successful. So what that means is that I have an extra ticket to the Tuesday show. So rather than give it to one of my other friends I thought it would be fun to have a little contest over here at PoP.

So here is the contest. You are to send me your favorite photo of your favorite room/spot in your home/apt. and tell me why it is your favorite. Alternatively you can take a photo anywhere in Logan Circle, Shaw, U Street, Columbia Heights or Petworth and tell me why you like that particular spot. The better the accompanying story the better your chances of winning. Obviously I will be posting many of these photos and stories so by virtue of sending them to me you are giving me permission to publish them. I will pick a winner the first week of Feb. so get cracking! Email submissions to [email protected]

I had heard a rumor a while back that Manny and Olga’s was coming but I just received an official press release today. The press release says:

“Silver Spring, MD – January 8th 2008 – Manny & Olga’s Pizza Systems Inc. announced today the expansion of its newest unit in the Petworth neighborhood of Washington, DC. With construction getting ready to begin the opening of the store is scheduled for early Summer 2008.”

Oddly it doesn’t give a location. But I do think this is a good development. I have a buddy who lives near the 14th Street location and he swears by it as a great (drunken) late night snack . I can certainly appreciate having that option closer to home.
