MPD Investigating Two Unrelated Police Involved Shootings Yesterday

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division are investigating two unrelated police involved shootings that occurred on Wednesday, May 29, 2013.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at approximately 1:31 pm, an off duty police officer from the 1st District interrupted a robbery in progress in the 3300 Block of Clay Street, NE. The officer was wearing his uniform shirt with another shirt over top of it when he observed what appeared to be a robbery in progress. The officer opened his cover shirt to reveal his police uniform shirt while inside of his personal vehicle. As the officer drove closer, the suspect fired several shots at the police officer and the officer returned fire. It is unknown at this time if any shots fired at the suspect took effect. The off duty officer was not injured. The suspect still remains at large.

On Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at approximately 2:15 pm, two on duty police officers from the 7th District spotted a vehicle that had been taken in a carjacking that had just occurred. The officers were able to get behind the vehicle and follow it. The vehicle came to a stop in the 900 block of Barnaby Street, SE where the suspect exited the vehicle and shot at the officers. Another officer arrived on the scene and the suspect then shot at that officer, and then turned back towards the two officers and fired again at them, at which time they fired their service weapons striking the suspect. Personnel from the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. One officer sustained a minor wound and was treated and released from a local hospital.

The decedent has been identified as 34-year-old Nathaniel McRae of Northwest, Washington DC.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
