11th Street Bridge Park Gets $3.5M Gift from the Logan Family and Bloomberg Philanthropies

“​The 11th Street Bridge Park​, a partnership between the local non-profit Building Bridges Across the River (BBAR) and the District government, today announced $3.5M in capital campaign gifts from the Reveda Foundation of the Logan Family and Bloomberg Philanthropies to be recognized at the park’s River Amphitheater and Bloomberg Trail. Located on the piers of the former 11th street bridge spanning the Anacostia River, D.C.’s first elevated public park will connect two long-divided communities providing a new venue for healthy recreation, environmental education and the arts.

Anchoring the park east of the river, the 250-seat Logan Family River Amphitheater will provide an active performance space for concerts, theater, film screenings, lectures and community events, with the Anacostia River serving as a dramatic backdrop.

“The Logan Family River Amphitheater will amplify the stories, culture and heritage of District residents,” said Dan Logan, President of the Reveda Foundation of the Logan Family. “We’re elated to support this new performance venue that will celebrate the arts for generations to come.”

The 11th Street Bridge Park design team is working to ensure the Bridge Park is deeply connected to adjacent neighborhoods while encouraging carbon-free transit. The 15-feet-wide Bloomberg Trail traverses the entire 1100 ft. long span and will connect to the Anacostia River bike trail on both sides of the river.

“The 11th Street Bridge Park is a community-driven space shaped by over 1,000 meetings with local stakeholders,” said Scott Kratz, Senior Vice President at Building Bridges Across the River. “The generous support of the Reveda Foundation of the Logan Family and Bloomberg Philanthropies brings us that much closer to realizing the region’s first elevated park that will physically and metaphorically bridge DC.”

With this $3.5 million commitment, Building Bridges Across the River has secured over $123.6 million towards a $139 million capital campaign goal that includes both bricks and mortar for the park and investments in affordable housing, workforce development and small business and cultural equity strategies.

Design for the 11th Street Bridge Park began in October 2014 after a seven-month competition to create the vision for the project, from which the design team of OMA+OLIN was selected. The Bridge Park project also drew on an extensive community outreach and a consultative process, anchored by more than 1,000 stakeholder meetings for design, development and impact. Pre-construction began in 2016 and the Park is expected to open by early 2025.”
