“DC Election/Voting PSA”

“Dear PoPville,

Can we get a PSA regarding voting in DC? I’m an election worker and it’s been very quiet this week–probably because of the absentee ballots, but we’ve also encountered a number of people who don’t know some things about how easy it is to vote here. Notably:

1. You can register to vote or update your address at the polling place! You don’t need to have done that ahead of time. The only thing we can’t do is change your party registration (unless you’re registered as an independent).

2. You can vote at ANY location, not just the ones in your ward. This is true for both early voting and Election Day.

3. You don’t need an ID to vote! In fact, DC election workers are specifically prohibited from asking for your ID (though if you have it, the process goes slightly quicker).

4. If you received a ballot in the mail, you can still vote in person if you prefer! (Or if, say, you filled in your ballot but your preferred candidate dropped out before you mailed it.) As long as you haven’t turned it in already, we don’t know any different.

And one mail-in ballot PSA: Make sure you sign the outside of the envelope before you drop it off!

Signed,
Your friendly neighborhood election worker”
