“PSA: Canceling your voter registration elsewhere”

“Dear PoPville,

I saw the post a couple of weeks ago about what to do with mail in ballots showing up at your address for people who no longer live there and wondered what it took to remove your name of the voting register when you move to a different state. (This also came out of an argument with a family member about voter fraud).

So, I did my due diligence and contacted the Board of Elections in the county in NJ where I’m originally from – where I’m still receiving a mail in ballot – and they told me I had to send something in writing via mail, fax, or email that includes my full name, DOB, old address, a statement that I no longer live in the county or in NJ, and the signature they have on file in order to remove me.

Figured this was worth sharing since there have been questions about it. I assume it’s different for every state but this is the deal for Bergen County, NJ. It was fun to get my name removed and prove lack of voter fraud to the angry family member :) It also shows how we need to update this antiquated system. It shouldn’t be so complicated to remove yourself, save the BOE money by not wasting a ballot, and have one more way to cut down the ridiculous voter fraud arguments.”
