“Ivy and Coney, located at 1537 7th St NW in historic Shaw, is proud to announce the triumphant return of the most important pop-up of the year, the amazing “Chai-vy and Cohen-y” Hanukkah Bar. From December 1st through Chinese-Food-and-a-Movie Day of the year 5779, the Manischewitz shall flow, the dreidels shall spin, latkes shall be noshed. Guests can expect a winter wonderland of awe-inspiring decorations created by the design firm The Maccabeasts, while sipping on cocktails custom-tailored to the occasion.

This year’s design theme will celebrate Hanukkah as the red panda of winter holidays. The theme will highlight how both the Jewish holiday and Ailurus Fulgens have played second fiddle to their more popular brethren. Cocktails from our Head Shicker Specialist, John Becker, will run the gamut from “The Fire Within” (shot of fireball, Manischewitz back) to “My Ashkenazi BF or Panda?” (Manischewitz, rocks glass) to “Fur BallMitzvah” (rum, coke). Guests should look forward to pictures of Rusty, DC’s premier zoo house escape artist, and impromptu wiki-fueled lectures on the red panda.

As you can see, at Chai-vy and Cohen-y we’re all about our history. There may be Prime Ministers sweeping assistants off their feet while zombie hunters fawn over pirate queens and there may be elves working through carpal tunnel syndrome (someone needs to unionize those guys). But, let’s not forget one key thing: before everyone’s favorite carpenter grew up to make water into franzia (wait, that’s awesome, why don’t we have that too?), he celebrated 8 CRAZY NIGHTS with us!
In honor of our holiday that involves actual fire (not just some wimpy string lights), we’ve added delicious homemade latkes, sufganiyot (homemade donuts with jelly), and Manischewitz’s fine kosher wines to Ivy and Coney’s comprehensive food and booze list. Also, each night we will be lighting the Hanukiyah at 7:30 PM (December 2nd through the 9th) and will be eating all the chocolate gelt, opening great tchatchke giveaways (socks, socks, foot mittens!) and spinning the dreidels.
Most importantly, we will be unleashing the Leviathan of Libation on our DC mishpocheh in the form of our custom-made shot menorah. The #ShotNorah (patent still pending) is designed for the enjoyment of eight guests at a time. The bartender will act as your shamash, pouring revelers a choice of Red Concord Manischewitz or fine Ivy spirits. No kvelling about stains on your clothes will be allowed.
What more can we say? It’s gonna be meshuggeneh! L’Chaim!
December 1st-Opening Party
December 2nd First Night of Hanukkah, candle lighting,1st gift for all guests (while supplies last)
December 3rd-8th Second through Seventh days of Hanukkah, candle lighting, gifts, donuts, latkes
December 9th Last Night of Hannukah, maybe a dreidel spinning competition, great gifts, and fun!
December 25th Bar closed out of respect for the holiest of holies, Chinese Food and Movie Day
December 26th Finish off all of the gelt, Mani, latkes and donuts, and survey the damage.
P.S. Due to the sacrilegious nature of the bar, all complaints may be sent to [email protected].”
