“$1350 Amazing Room In Adams Morgan with a View of the Washington Monument

My huge room in a two bedroom, one bath unit on an upper floor of the Calverton Apartments is available. It is an amazing unit with a lot of natural light, hardwood floors, a massive bathroom, two very large storage closets, great and responsive building manager and staff, and rent includes air/heat! Gas, electric, and cable/internet are not included. Laundry is on site, front desk attendant in the evenings (very secure building), secure package delivery, and wonderful building tenants. I can’t say enough good things about this apartment. Across the street is Potters House and Federalist Pig (if you haven’t tried this BBQ place you should!). (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was so sad when Bohemian Caverns shut down and was really hoping someone with an understanding of how special that place is would buy and revamp it. Since closing in 2016, it sat with paper blocking the windows and the victim of tasteless graffiti. In the past few weeks, however, there has been signs of life to that building. Someone is clearly testing paint colors on its exterior and the paper has been removed from the windows. There is even an old desk in the window advertising for sale (although no info on how to buy it). Anyone know what is going on with the building? Would love to get it back!!”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to pass along the details of a very unfortunate incident that happened to our family over the holidays. We reserved and pre-paid for a Super Shuttle direct ride from BWI to NW DC. We made the reservation two weeks in advance because we were coming back right after New Year’s and were going to land close to midnight so we wanted to make sure that we had a ride home.

We land at BWI at 11 pm, while waiting for our bags we called Super Shuttle and were told that there were two vans waiting and one was for us. We made our way to the meeting point in the Departure Terminal and got there at 11:10 pm to see only one Super Shuttle van full of passengers. We ran to ask the driver where the other van was and he referred us to the Dispatcher on site, she was hiding sitting on the floor next to the door. We asked her about our van and told her that we had a pre-paid direct ride, she stopped texting, looked up and told us “Sorry your ride was cancelled, call the 800 number to get a refund”. (more…)

Hello PoPville, we would like wish everyone a wonderful Happy New Years. We wanted to warm everyone’s heart with a story that broke in December. We had the pleasure to meet Robin McKenney, who recently went from homelessness to homeownership.

Her story started when her subsidized home became uninhabitable which lead to a series of bureaucratic issues with her and her family ending up in one of the local hotels that stand in as temporary shelters for some of DC’s neediest residents. It was along that path that Robin was inspired to make a decision; the best way she could prevent this from happening again is to have ownership of her own property or as she says, “I now have the key to the city.”

We sat down with her to learn about her journey and what experiences she had with what the city has to offer for individuals looking to own. So how did she do it?

All of the below resources and descriptions are brief explanations and each of these programs have different requirements and limitations.

Robin had talked a lot about the support she received from LaRuby May, so we thought to reach out to her and hear her side of Robin’s journey. When speaking with former council member LaRuby May, who now owns The May Firm Pllc. Ms. May was an architect several years ago with an initiative called Move To Work Designation, which allows subsidized voucher recipients to use some of that money to assist in the payment of homes they own. In addition, there are several non-profit organizations that Robin was also able to coordinate with in order to facilitate with down payment assistance, credit repair and general education on homeownership responsibilities. From a press release:

“Cafe Saint-Ex is starting 2018 with a fresh slate. The 14th Street restaurant and bar, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, recently underwent a facelift in the main dining room with bigger changes behind the pass, naming Joel Hatton its new executive chef.

“We’ve been long-time fans of Chef Hatton and his Southern-style comfort food,” says co-owner Jonathan Fain. “14th Street has changed a lot since we started, and we’re excited to grow and change with the neighborhood to continue to be a destination people seek out to have a fun night out with delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere.”

Chef Hatton joined the Saint-Ex team just before the new year having most recently headed up the kitchen at the recently shuttered 1905 Restaurant & Bar. Prior to that, he was the opening chef at Shaw’s Tavern and the long-time executive chef at Leopold’s Kafe in Georgetown. A native of North Carolina, his menus have a definite Southern flair with all the flavors of home. (more…)

Thanks to Duane for sending around 5pm yesterday. Technically I think these guys are either Turkey Vultures or Black Vultures. Our resident ornithologist has grand jury duty – can anyone confirm exactly what these guys are called? Whatever they are called they caused quite the scene yesterday. And because Twitter can be awesome – check out this phenomenal/terrifying encounter by Dayana Sarkisova back on December 31st. It is INSANE.

But yesterday’s story gets better/worse:

If you spot a hawk or any other bird of prey or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

More photos from Duane after the jump. (more…)
