La Tomate is located at 1701 Connecticut Avenue, NW. I’ve been wondering what’s going on with the construction in the little space next to their restaurant between the coming soon Cheeky Puppy (former Du Froyo space.) A worker at the space tells me that La Tomate is opening up a little cafe connected to the main restaurant. The worker says the space will have cappuccinos, sandwiches and that sorta thing. More details and updates when they get closer to opening.

Although the clientele was different, La Tomate was a 90s icon in much the same way as Pasta Mia and survived partly because red sauce Italian food in DC was and has remained so bland and awful. It was a step-up and attracted a celeb clientele The last tie I was there, food had deteriorated to the usual level of DC Italian mediocrity and the place clearly had lost its luster. Given escalating rents on Connecticut Avenue, I’m surprised it’s still there, let alone opening an offshoot.

They still do a steady semi-power lunch business.

It’s always doing a brisk business every day when I walk by. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear there is an offshoot. As you may or may not know, there are plenty of folks in this city who are willing to eat in non-shipping-container restaurants.
