Man Found Dead in the Tidal Basin at the FDR Memorial, SW

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating the undetermined death of an adult male found in the Tidal Basin near the FDR Memorial, SW.

On Thursday, April 11, 2013, at approximately 12:51 am, members of the Second District responded to the Tidal Basin near the FDR Memorial, SW, for the report of an unconscious male. Upon arrival they located an unconscious and unresponsive adult male in the water along West Basin Drive, SW. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and did not find any signs of life. The decedent was removed from the water by members of DC Fire Department. He was later pronounced dead by a member of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. There were no visible signs of trauma observed on the decedent. The decedent has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner pending an autopsy.

The decedent has been identified as 35-year-old V. Sarathkumar Potharaju of Grayslake, Illinois.

He was reported missing on Sunday, March 31, 2013, in Washington, D.C., near the FDR Memorial and the Tidal Basin, SW. The missing person report and investigation was handled by the United States Park Police. At this time, there is no indication of foul play. The investigation is ongoing.
