i was chatting with one of the golden triangle staff while sitting in farragut park on friday afternoon and he told me about this. whether true or not, his version was that the man was on holiday with his family and they got separated at some point while visiting tidal basin. how the man ended up in the water was unknown but evidently, he didn’t know how to swim. details aside, very sad turn of events.

That seems to be the version I’ve seen in media reports–he was a tourist on a bus tour, his family went to the restroom, and when they got back he was gone. It was a rainy day and not a lot of people around, so I’m sure he could have slipped or something.
