“Dear PoPville,

Anyone know of anything preventing me from legally posting a “No Dumping” sign in the alley behind my house? My neighbors and I are tired of finding new pieces of trash dumped in the alley/empty lots that are located behind our houses– would like to at least try to discourage would-be dumpers with a “No Dumping” sign.”

Just post it. It likely wont help, but you are not going to get in trouble for posting a sign.

+1. If nothing else it should be protected by the first amendment.

It’s kind of pathetic that you would have to post a sign that basically should be one of life’s rules. What’s next, having to post a “no urinating” sign?

  • I agree with the others who have posted so far. If you’re posting it on private property then you’re definitely fine. If you’re posting it on public property, then technically you may be out of order but the worst that will likely happen is someone else may take the sign down.

  • Please report back and let us know if it changes anything!

    • Seriously? Do you think you could be arrested/fined/scolded for posting a “no dumping” sign? Come on.

      • I think wdc was asking the OP to report back if a “no dumping” sign actually discouraged people from dumping.

  • No. Read. Clearly was asking about legality. “Anyone know of anything preventing me from legally posting a “No Dumping” sign?”

    • What the actual hell, victoria? What is going on with you that you need to police the relevance of responses to a blog post, TWICE??
I would honestly like to know if posting a (legal as was covered by previous responses) sign deters folks from dumping trash in alleys.

  • You’re assuming the people dumping things know how to read, which is hilarious. Won’t work. Applaud you for the effort.

Or will think twice because there’s a sign. Although maybe it will cause them to dump things behind his neighbor’s house instead.

  • I don’t see why this would be any different than the beware of dog signs or the no trespassing signs. I would even have 2 signs 1. would say “No DUMPING”, the other “Your ACTIONS ARE BEING RECORDED”. Worked for one of my friends who kept having folks poop in his backyard…
