It’s too bad that DCPS has some of the highest per-pupil spending of any school system in the country and yet still has to rely on fundraisers like this. I’m not suggesting it’s a bad cause, but given that DC residents are already taxed at such a high rate I sometimes wonder if we’re getting our money’s worth.

  • Go WILDCATS! Garrison PTA is very active and local businesses/establishments, Whole Foods, Logan Hardware, and Chipotle, have all been very supportive during school fieldtrips. Looking forward to seeing everyone come out and help out our neighborhood school.

  • These types of fundraisers are very common across the US. Despite the neighborhood improving, a great number of students at Garrison come from disadvantaged families (at one point nearly 100% were eligible for free/reduced lunch). Per capita spending is a fraction of a percent of the picture. Dollars go much farther in schools in financially stronger/stable neighborhoods.

All the best with their fundraiser!

  • I did my part — ate at Chipotle on 14th and told them I was supporting Garrison. Hope they raise lots tonight!! (Although I went about 5:45, I didn’t see anything about getting the Bikeshare coupon.)
