Bus delays, detours this evening due to National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

“The lighting ceremony for the National Christmas Tree is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on the Ellipse, just south of the White House. The event usually lasts till about 7 p.m.

From WMATA:

“Thursday, December 4, 2014 | 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

The following routes may experience delays and unplanned detours as a result of rush-hour street closures and traffic congestion near the White House due to the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony:

3Y, 7Y, 11Y, 16X, 16Y, 30N, 30S, 32, 36, 37, 38B, 39, 42, 43, 52, 53, 54, 80, D1, D3, D5, D6, G8, H1, L1, N2, N3, N4, P6, P17, P19, S1, S2, S4, S9, W13, X1 and X2

Please allow extra time and sign up for MetroAlerts to receive updated travel information. Metro encourages riders to use Metrorail to bypass downtown congestion, and then transfer to bus service outside downtown. Customers using SmarTrip receive a $0.50 discount when transferring between Metrobus and Metrorail. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this event.

During this event, the following streets will be closed:

15th Street NW between Constitution & Pennsylvania Ave NW
17th Street NW between Constitution & New York Ave NW

Routes 11Y, H1, L1, G8, N3, P17, P19, S2, S4, W13, X1 and X2 will begin service from temporary bus terminals as follows:

Routes H1, L1 and N3 will begin service at C St & 18th St NW
Route X1 will begin service at the 10th St terminal
Routes 11Y, G8, P17, P19, W13 and X2 will begin service at Franklin Square
Some S2 and S4 trips will turn back near Franklin Square
