  • If you paint a party wall, this can always happen. It’s sad, but not a bad thing for a city to fill a vacant lot with productive uses.

    • Exactly. A lot of murals exist because of exposed walls on vacant lots that weren’t vacant before 1968.

  • I really don’t like the murals in this city. There, I said it.

    • you should seriously consider moving to springfield

      • +1! dc has a great public art landscape.

      • Wow…I got a “You should move to (Springfield, Reston, etc..)” in less than 10 minutes. I’m astounded by your originality!

        • And defensively demanding uniform opinions seems like more of a suburban mindset than publicly challenging prevailing sympathies. “Different opinion? Get him!”

        • nah, you should consider moving to Mannassas, not Springfield. Springfield is too vibrant and urban for the likes of you.

  • WTF? How wide is this lot? It looks miniscule!

    • There used to be a house on this lot. It’s the same width and you can see where the stairs used to be. It’s big enough.

  • While it’s great. It also is an ad for Heineken…

    • Ehh, I know the Heineken logo is on there, and that does give them a smidgen of advertising… but I think this can legitimately said to be a mural _sponsored_ by Heineken, with a fairly small and unobtrusive logo in the corner, rather than a sneaky Heineken ad masquerading as a Marvin Gaye mural.

  • Whoever is taking down that awesome picture of Marvin Gaye but be a friend of his Father! This is a horrible thing to do.

    • This lot was sold to a developer with intentions to build about a month prior to the mural going up. I am very pleased that this site will no longer serve as a dump, garbage magnet and rat haven. The mural was a cool, if temporary addition to the neighborhood. I always thought the stair pattern that was visible before the mural went up was pretty cool too. The new structure will be a 2 unit condo.

FWIW, I witnessed an exchange between a neighbor and the mural painter. It went something like this:

Neighbor – you know they are going to rebuild on this lot soon and it will cover up your painting.
Painter – I know, but I am supposed to get this mural done.
