From the MPD-3D Listserv:

“Any more information about the gun shoots by the Civil War Memorial/U St Metro that happened which had a few blocks of U St closed off?”

MPD replies:

“Our units were called to the area for the sounds of gunshots. We were able to find evidence relating to actual shots being fired but have not located any witnesses or victims relating to it. If anyone has any information pertaining to this, they are encouraged to call (202) 727-9099.”

  • From a neighborhood list:

    “Dear Friends,

I have confirmed with MPD that as many as 6-7 shots were fired between two persons just outside the entrance to the U Street Metro, at the African American Civil War Memorial. It happened just a short time ago.

MPD states that there were no known injuries. There are witnesses. Some damage may have occurred to one of the walls of the Memorial.

It is not known, at this point, whether the shooters came from the Metro, or whether the fight began there.

I will provide more information as it becomes available

    Councilmember Jim Graham”

  • A running gun battle near the U Street metro might not have been shocking 5-10 years ago. But nowadays? It’s pretty surprising. Houses right next to here are selling for $900K+. That’s rich people money and there’s folks outside their front door shooting things up. Kinda nuts, IMHO.

  • There was a big party in the building next to the CVS there. I saw a lot of bouncers, people hanging around in front, and music blaring so loud the windows where shaking. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but I definitely heard the shots around 9:30pm and people who saw said it was “stupid kids.”

  • The Express this morning reporting that police informed Civil War Memorial and Museum director Frank Smith that more than 60 (!!!) shots were fired.

    • I read that two and was amazed I hadn’t heard about it yet. So of course I came here to see if it was posted and sure enough it was. So I wonder which is the misinformation? But, with that said, 60 is a lot of damn bullets so I am guessing it was 6 or 7.
