  • That’s totally messed up. I was hanging out with my friend on Oak St last night on his porch, it was such a nice evening, no idea something evil like this was about to go down.

  • So awful.

  • Horrible. I hope the victims recover mentall and physically as soon as they can, and that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.

  • This is just awful. I live around the corner from the site of the sexual assault. I second jindc in wishing the victims a speedy mental and physical recovery!

  • A man with a ski mask was seen last sunday in the alley behind 1366 Spring Road, but he quickly vanished.

  • I would like to know more information about what the couple in the car was doing. Was the car moving down the road? Were they parked on the street or in one of the several lots on that block of Meridian?

I walked down that street at 1130 last night and didn’t see a soul.

    • It was Sunday night, just into Monday morning.

And I ALWAYS want to know what people are doing just sitting in cars. There’s a guy who lives across the street from me who seems to prefer his car to his house.

      • I’ve often wondered why people sit in their cars in that lot. Does anyone know?

        • I would guess that for some people it’s one place where they can have a few minutes of relative quiet and privacy.

  • here’s the Channel 4 newscast from last night:!/news/local/Woman-Sexually-Assaulted–Robbed-in-Columbia-Heights/206339901

Looks like they were parked in that terribly dodgy parking lot on Meridian (not sure why they were there, but I never see good things going down in that lot), and then they forced her over to the backyard of one of the more run-down houses on Oak where you can easily access their backyard on Ogden.

    • Cripes. They stopped her as she was driving into the parking lot? That is … not what I was expecting.

  • They forced her through 2 alleys to get to that backyard that opens up to Ogden. What’s more disturbing is the amount of foot traffic that part of Ogden gets (even in the evenings). All CH residents need to be concerned about this.

    • Pretty sure they ended up on the main Ogden street in order to get that back yard. The area between the house and the apartment building is fenced off, so you come out on Ogden and walk down the big wide street and then turn into that yard. Pretty ballsy indeed.

  • I live near there and this is terrifying. There are lots of places in the alleys/ backyards between Odgen, Oak, and Center for people to hide or commit horrible crimes, even with all the foot traffic along Ogden.

  • That whole triangle of streets needs a sub-police station. One could agrue that this area is one of the more dangerous areas of CoHi and def warrants more police attention.
For the most part it seems to be gentrifying slowly, Cooper’s Hardware is vacant and the building for sale (seemed like shady stuff going down there), The Fried Fish Carryout across from Hubbard Place ( another drug den) is out, Browns Furniture Store is going out of business, hopefully replaced with something a bit more promising, the major drug raid on Meridian a few months back, and the new, well lite store fronts along Ogden by the “park” are all good signs.

But still the unfinished Bacon Funeral Home sits, Johnny’s Carryout is a late night gathering spot for deviants up to no good, and just the general feeling along that stip of 14th Street is so shady.

I used to visit the GetAway and the Pinch, but now I stay clear of that part of CoHi. Much rather take my chances of 11th st.

    • Hell, the Exxon station hosts just as many deviants up to no good as any place along that strip. I would recommend that people stay out of the Meridian, Oak, Ogden triangle at night.

  • Can anyone (elected officials, police etc) explain what is being done to prevent this or fix the problem? This is awful to read and I agree with the other commenters who are praying for the victims. I hope they catch those responsible.

  • There’s a group of juveniles that has been known to cause problems around that part of Meridian. I think they mostly live in the apartments behind the parking lot. I’m sure that the police is aware of these kids – seems like a good place to start.

    • You think those were kids?

    • The ages of those who seemed to be part of that crew varied widely. I can’t even begin to speculate about the ages of the perpetrators as I was not there. Simply wanted to echo others’ comments that there are known seedy elements in that neighborhood.

  • in my opinion this crime should merit life imprisonment.

  • The police fingered a suspect in this case and are circulating a picture in hopes of finding the perp.
