Crumbs Bake Shop Coming to old Schakolad Chocolate Space in Dupont

Back in early Nov. ’11 we noted that Schakolad had closed their retail space at 1107 19th St, NW (just north of L street.) A permit on the window confirms some scuttlebutt that a Crumbs Bake Shop will be moving into the space.

Crumbs is on a tear. While they haven’t reached Fro-yen-yo proportions, in late Oct. ’11 they opened up at 888 17th St. NW and they already have stores at 604 11th Street NW and in Union Station.

    D’oh! Right across from my office…now my fro-yo runs just got shorter and cakier. So not good for the old waistline!

  • I had a cupcake at Crumbs in Clarendon this weekend, and I didn’t love it. The frosting (and I love frosting) was sort of sugary gross, and the cupcake had that cornmeal quality I despise about Cake Love cakes. Maybe it was just a bad choice of cup cake — marble cake with white icing.

    When is the blintz craze going to hit? I love cheese blintzes with cherries on top.

    • I felt the same way when I tried Crumbs for the first (and only) time. I got some sort of peanut butter-chocolate cupcake and it was just way too much. The portion size was too big, there was way too much frosting, and the frosting was incredibly bland.

      I’m on board with blintzes being the next big thing!

    • Totally with you – I don’t understand the appeal of Crumbs. The frosting is grossly sweet, and the cupcake is dry and crumbly. And they are either off-puttingly large or bite-sized. Because it’s so popular I’ve tried them a few times, thinking maybe it was an off day, but it wasn’t, that’s what they’re like. I say the same thing I say about CakeLove, I could make a better cupcake from a Duncan Hines mix.

      And now I want blintzes. Mmmmm, cheese blintz with a sprinkle of cinnamon…

    I’m a HUGE Crumbs fan! The Tiramasu cupcake is to die for!

  • I’m all for cupcakes, but I find Crumbs the least appealing of them. Hard to finish.
