Huge Fire on 600 Block of Quincy, NW Mon. Night

DCfireems says on twitter:

“Quincy St NW – cause under invest – appears accidental – damage $100K – maybe 2 families displaced – no injuries”

And a reader who sent in the photos writes:

“Apparently the fire is out now, but it looks like 612, 614, and 616 Quincy St NW burned today. 612 and 614 look particularly devastated, 616 (the one with the fire truck ladder over the roof) at least has all of its windows. 612 has been vacant for years now, the other two houses are occupied.”

It is sad to hear that a couple of families have been displaced but thankfully there were no injuries, great response from the emergency responders.

  • I saw a Red Cross truck on the scene.

  • The Park View blog has some additional photos too that you can see here

  • Hate to say it….but this was so predictable. The vacant house had been occupied by squatters for some time.

    • I think the house that sustained the most destruction, including what appears to be loss of the entire upstairs and roof, is next to the vacant house. I believe the destroyed house was occupied, that family now houseless. It appears the vacant house suffered less damage. I don’t believe people had been staying in the vacant house for at least the past several months, FYI.

  • I didn’t realize the house was vacant. A woman on the street said she heard that it was some sort of electrical fire that spread to a couple of other homes.

    • The investigating firemen on the scene could not name a cause for this fire so clearly the woman on the street wouldn’t know any better, the likelihood of an electrical cause notwithstanding. But it sure did spread, at least a little, whatever the cause.

  • First of all, let me say that nobody was hurt in this fire. We’ve had a fantastic show of support and offers from help from our neighbors and are very grateful to every one of them.

The Red Cross did come right away, and set up shop at our house to help our neighbors at 614, who have lost everything. They were amazing! Cooking food, providing toiletries and gift cards to get new clothes, etc. Please think about making a donation to the Red Cross if you’re feeling charitable.

612 is an abandoned house, but the squatters who had lived there have been gone for a while. There has not been an inspection yet, but the fire started at 614 and was likely an electrical fire.

We got a jump start on some renovations via the fire department and quite a bit of smoke damage, but thankfully most of the trauma appears to be superficial and hopefully we will be able to move back in pretty soon.

  • This is Wendy Harman from the American Red Cross (also, incidentally, from the Banneker Chair FB group – thanks for your help PoP). Glad our chapter could be there. Hope you’re back in your home soon, 616 Quincy Resident.
