Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. DC already feels deserted so I hope those still left at work get to take off soon!

  • Rave: Getting out of work early!! Even though I’m not getting out as early as my friend on the hill (Noon, really??), I’m still excited about getting out at 2:30!

More raves: Using my early time off to shop a little and then going to my favorite lounge to hang out with friends since I can’t be home for the holiday. 😀

  • Rave: The owner of my company is frying turkeys (over 100) for everyone.
    Rant: I don’t eat meat.
Rant #2: I’m not off this Friday.

Anyone know of good places around town with good drink and/or food deals tonight (preferably in close proximity to a Metro stop)? I’m extremely frugal.

  • neither rant nor rave, any bars open on Thanksgiving in CH besides Commonwealth?

  • Rave: I have 6 days off not to think about grad school or my awful internship, My friends in the military are home on leave and my favorite uncle is in town. And there are only 2 weeks left in the semester.

ravey rant: made 6 pies last night. now hate pie.

  • Dboe-

We’re moving in a couple of weeks. I’ll be happy to take boxes off your hands if you don’t want to keep them.

  • Rave – I read quite a bit about Abe Pollin who seems like a well liked, genuine and decent man. He also invested his own $$ in DC (Gallery Place) when it was thought to be a less than sound business decision. Woodward & Lothrop was out of business and there was not a lot going on Downtown when he built the MCI center. The impact of the MCI center was huge. Part of it was timing but it took vision.

The before and after pictures of CH were cool does anyone have any Gallery Place before and after pictures?

  • Rant: The Feds get dismissed 2hr early, but contracters have to work the whole day. I hate the government.

    Rave: I have friday off

OMG I LOVE Patti LaBelle’s mac and cheese! A friend at work makes it and it is to die for!

  • Rant: Just found out a good Navy friend of mine is being shipped off to Guam!

Rant2: Almost went off on someone (anyone!) in the post office. There was only one guy working and a line of 12 people waiting. Seriously??? Man, oh, man was he taking his time!

    Rave: Friday off!

  • DC Native: You should come work for me.
I just sent all of my guys home early after spending the last two hours having lunch beers at the local cigar bar.
Damn is feels good to be management…

  • @Dboe: Welcome to the neighborhood!
    Rave: Tomorrow off!
    Rant: Working Friday.
    Rave: Survived the layoffs!
Rant: Said goodbye to two of our best guys with 65 years of experience between them. Boo. Funny, though, they seemed pretty happy to be taking early retirement and one of them had been been scheming for six months and already found a better job.

  • RANT: The freakin’ traffic signals on Park Rd and 16th, it took like 15 minutes to go 1/2 block. So much for transit oriented development compact mixed use development reducing vehicle emissions, christ sake! The area between 14th/target and Park has now got to be one of the worst traffic spots in the region.

  • Rant: Working midnights tonight and Thanksgiving night.
Rave: Extra pay for first responders

Rave: People will likely be passed out by the time I go to work tomorrow night

  • @asI – happy to share the wealth. email me a dboe16 at gmail dot com.

  • Let’s take time also to pause and reflect kindly on the spirit of this most American of holidays, and the true story of the voyage that would change the world:

    The Dutch coast of Delfthaven in 1620, William Bradford and his 102 Pilgrims of Leyden (including 35 children) crammed below deck on a 90 foot ship called the Mayflower;

The half that survived at Plymouth Rock settlement planting corn, potatoes and raising turkeys with the indigenous Indians they encountered peacefully to then enjoy, Pilgrim and Indian together, their first harvest feast: the first Thanksgiving in 1621.

“O most merciful Father, we bow our heads in gratitude on this our Thanksgiving Day. We give thee humble and hearty thanks for this thy bounty; beseeching thee to continue thy loving kindness to us, that our land may yield her increase, to thy glory and our comfort. Amen.”

-Thanksgiving Day Propers (1689) from The Episcopalian Book of Common Prayer.

Rave: had a ball again with the people I have Bird-Day with. This makes the 10th time I had thanks giving in my 37 years on earth. I feel normal.

Great conversations with alot of people from all kinds of backgrounds.

I brought back a ton of food and will be heading my parents house to share since this is the only time they get thanksgiving food. Funny seeing them get excited over left overs lol. But I love taking it to them.

At Fraking work and its a ghost town.
Over ate…who would had thought it….

  • 24 pound turkey, 20 friends, 6 gallons of soup cooking now, 23 empty wine bottles, 3 safe-sleepovers, 2 freaking $50.00 parking tickets on their cars this morning! Doesn’t it seem like the day after Thanksgiving would be holiday/weekend parking? I know I should have thought about it, but I’d had my share of those 23 bottles.

The real twist of the knife is that people are illegally parked where they were every single day – and the ticket writers come maybe once a week. Today was definitely a sneak attack.

Not enough to dim the great Thanksgiving day but the sort of nasty little thing our fair city engages in too often.
