Dear PoP – Screen on the Green Canceled

Screen on the Green, originally uploaded by lonecellotheory.

“Hi PoP!

Do you know any more info on why HBO canceled Screen On The Green this year? As much as I can’t sit in one place for a long time, and have only been able to attend one movie a year for the last two years, I really enjoy it and am sad that it’s not happening.”

DCist reports:

“According to Doninger, the cancellation of Screen on the Green had to do with financial issues involving the premium cable network’s sponsorship of the event.”

This economy is ruining everything! A Facebook page has been created to save the event. But hopefully another generous sponsor will pick up where HBO left off. This was always a great event. Ugh.

  • Hey
but dont forget the Noma summer screen
they will be doing great music movies all summer

  • I have found memories of screen on the screen. Casablanca, with the US Capitol as the backdrop was a bit ironic, but amazing none the less…..bring it back. “Here’s looking at you kid….”

  • Rosslyn is having an 80s movies marathon outside on fridays seems like a good stop gap until Screen on the Green figures its stuff out.

  • for some rosslyn might work, but i choose to live on this side of the river. i’ll sorely miss screen on the green, but am exicted to try the noma option.

  • This really stinks! Screen on the Green was always my good excuse for a cheap date or my convenient way to catch up with friends on neutral turf. I plan to check out a few of the other options listed by people so far but I certainly hope that HBO decides to renew this program once we’re safely on the outside of these trying economic times.

  • forget NoMa and definitel forget Rosslyn..the Capitol Riverfront BID is showing ALL 80’s movies outside this summer! the lineup looks awesome and its metro accessible. I think it starts June 4 with Back to the Future. and click on calender and scroll through.

  • I copied this from an email I got from the Riverfront Connections newsletter. It’s what Anonymous above is referring to:
