Shoppers at Target Robbed at Gunpoint?

This tip just in from a reader:

“The new Target was just robbed. A friend of mine tried to go shopping there but can’t get in because the place is closed and surrounded by cop cars. Apparently, five people were robbed at gunpoint upon exiting the store.”

Yikes. Can anyone confirm?

UPDATED: I’m going to have to agree with the sentiment that this is probably just a rumor.

  • damn. there is a very serious crime problem in this area right now. did anybody read those stories about the people robbed at gun point in BROAD DAYLIGHT at the metro? this is crazy.

  • This is crazy. I notice no shortage of traffic cops slowing things down, but cops walking the street are nowhere to be found…

  • Let’s be reasonable and make sure this has been confirmed before accepting it as true. I haven’t seen this in the news, and my friend was just over there and texted everything seems normal.

  • yeah, i was watching the news and there was nothing. you’d think it would make the news…

  • i’m in NE DC, but my buddies in the area said that nothing was going on….

  • I haven’t heard anything about a robbery and can’t find it on the local news sites, but I did hear on the news that a chunk of Target’s roof was blown off last weekend in the windstorm. Seems a bit soon for that sort of thing, eh?

  • Well, I saw the police helicopter flying overhead this evening, but it departed shortly. Not that that necessarily means anything, but just FWIW.

  • well, I can’t tell you how often I hear gunshots and get word of muggings on the neighborhood list serve and there’s nothing at all in the news. they just don’t get there that quick. hard enough to get the police to show up.

  • Yeah, but with all the hype around the opening of that store, a robbery at gunpoint would make the news.

  • Maybe we can ask a Target employee to find out if this really happened. Let’s hope it didn’t happen.

I have emailed MPD to see if they can confirm. I, too, think something would be on the news though. I’ll update as soon as I hear back.

  • I was in Target around 8:30 this eve and it was crowded. Not to mention that there was tons of security there. I talked to a neighbor who had gone at 7. This robbery would have had to occur and the police conclude their investigation in a few minutes for neither of us to have noticed

The tipster wrote me at 3:30pm.

  • I was there around 5pm and even briefly spoke to the Store Manager whom I had met at the ribbon cutting. He mentioned nothing of a robbery and only said that business was “booming”…. would be surprised if there had been an incident of that magnitude…

  • My boyfriend was in the Target this afternoon, leaving at 4pm. He didn’t see anything. I think this is just a rumor.

  • I bet the tipster was Wal-Mart, planting rumors…. 😉

  • I heard the rumor this past weekend (would’ve mentioned somethin but it was a rumor afterall) although slightly altered… the way I heard it people were getting robbed upon their entrance to the CH metro of their Target wares… I’m going to assume that one person got jacked of their shower curtain rods and the telephone chain did the rest.

…on a related note arent you glad we live in such a ‘dynamic’ neighborhood:

  • This is obviously some jealous suburbanite spreading rumors. gah!

  • PoP,

This is worse than CNN headline news. Can you PLEASE stop with the damaging rumors. It hurts our community. Confirm the bullshit before you post. I’m disappointed. Seriously.

  • Maybe the rumor was spread by the ghost of Sam Walton

  • Someone posted the rumor on the CH listserv, I think that’s where its from

  • I have it from a very good source that there was an armed robbery last week. It was not in the store but did involve people who had been at Target.

  • Park Road Guy- Come on… this is a blog, not the Wall Street Journal. Sheesh.

I was there yesterday afternoon and nothing was going on.

  • I agree with Park Road Guy. This isn’t the WSL or NYT, but it’s well known that a lot of people use POP as a hyperlocal news source. The CH listserv actually picked the rumor up from this blog. Also, many newspapers such as the Washington City Paper pick up “news” feeds from this blog. So it’s important for Prince of Petworth to practice responsible reporting.

  • I don’t think that POP did anything wrong. He was clear that the “tip” needed confirmation.

  • Wow. Next thing you know this blog will have to be plastered with banner ads to cover the cost of PoP’s legal department. (rolling eyes, continuing to read this and any other blog critically and remember that Web 2.0 is all about user-generated content…)

  • Uh yeah, he said right there, “Can anybody confirm?” I think it’s useful for us not just to read PoP as a source of information (which it often is a great one) but to use it as a community board, or a clearinghouse, if you will, for neighborhood information. PoP often asks us for our opinions or knowledge on the stuff he posts about. And lo’, check it out, we all together figured out it was a rumor. Good work, team!

    Hello Neighbors

What you hear are rumors regarding this incident that have no bearing or merit. What actually occurred was that store employees that were caught stealing from the Target. Rumors like this cast a negative light on Columbia Heights and will discourage developers and new home owners from investing in Columbia Heights.

If there is ever a question about crime in your neighborhood you could email me at [email protected].

  • Unbelieveable these employees stealing..

  • If PoP does indeed start hiring out for a legal dept. I want to be on staff… I wonder if he’ll offer tuition reimbursment?

  • PoP, You got straight-up called out by DCist for starting rumors…good idea to be a bit more responsible with your reporting…

  • Maybe the story popped up out of the robberies on the CH escalators by a 17 year old who was robbing people by gun point. That was on 3/4 and 3/5. He was robbing people of their wallets and cell phones and telling them “they were lucky they didn’t get shot over this.”

  • “Ragin’ Cagin”

Seriously, this is a blog/community web sight.
    PoP is a neighbor/friend/community awareness advocate/ect.
    NOT a reporter.
    He simply asked a question.

  • The City Paper followed up with Officer Delgado, and it turns out the employee theft story was bullshit, too. Maybe we need to raise our expectations a little, or these rumors will turn out to be a self-fulfilling prophecies.

As a side note, I’ve been really impressed with how professional and friendly the employees at Target and Bed Bath and Beyond have been. It’s uncommon in this area. Who knows if they will get jaded after the initial euphoria wears off, but it’s refreshing to be treated kindly and competently.
