“Dear PoPville,

I have noticed lately people getting ‘stuck’ in metro stations because either their card is not working or all the faregates are screwed up. that is only one part of the problem. the second part is the station managers being god knows where. so people usually just stay…..stuck…and wait. hoping a manager will show up to help.

people can call it breaking the law, but in every metro station, there is an ‘emergency gate’ – – it swings open. you don’t need a smart trip card or anything. if there is a crowd of people, then it starts to back everything up. it does not have to be that way. You got places to go? You don’t have time to wait around? the ‘emergency gate’ is your friend. JUST GO. I have used it, and I have helped people (mainly tourists) use it to get down to the platforms.

We all just want to get from point A to point B. It shouldn’t be so damn hard.”

Ed. Note: If you do use an emergency gate, you’ll have to talk to a station manager at some point before your fare card will work again.

From WMATA:

“Metro today announced the addition of a full-time fire/rescue liaison in its Rail Operations Control Center. This addition will provide a uniformed fire officer in the “nerve center” of the Metrorail system 40 hours a week to help coordinate emergency communication between Metro and first responders.

“The new fire/rescue liaison at the Rail Operations Control Center gives first responders ‘eyes and ears’ on Metrorail operations and will serve to further strengthen the coordination between our operations staff and emergency personnel,” said Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik. “I want to thank MWCOG Fire Chiefs Chair Marc Bashoor for his leadership and look forward to continuing our productive relationship.”

The newly created position is the result of ongoing discussions between Metro and the region’s fire chiefs. In addition to coordinating emergency response, the fire official will also develop policy recommendations and provide supplemental emergency training for rail controllers. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to alert you and your readers to something that happened on the metro yesterday (Saturday) around 7:30pm on the blue line going toward Franconia-Springfield. While entering the train at McPherson Square, I noticed that a male passenger sitting near the doors was either filming or photographing twenty-something female passengers without their knowledge or consent. At first I thought he was watching a video on his iPhone until I realized the scenes on his phone were other passengers. He even zoomed in on the bare legs and upper thigh area of one of the passengers. I was completely disgusted and walked to the other end of the train. I regret not knowing what else to do as I feared getting a photo of him, advising the other passengers, and/or confronting him would further threaten the safety of those within the train.

I wanted to let you know so that your readers keep an eye out for this type of behavior and what their fellow passengers may be doing on their devices. Many other passengers sat near this man and it appeared none of them were aware of what was happening. Unfortunately the man had no real identifying characteristics so giving a physical description would not be helpful.”

Ed. Note: Back in December a reader reported a “Creep filming women on Metro” then posts footage to an adult site.
