Steakhouse explosion of ’14 continues today with Mastro’s Steakhouse.

@ranpuba tweets us:

“Hey @PoPville, info on this replacement for M&S Grill?”

Back in March we learned that Mastro’s Steakhouse would be taking over the former M&S Grill space which closed in June 2013.

Mastro’s website says:

“Mastro’s collection of sophisticated, classic Steakhouses and Ocean Club Seafood locations are recognized for their combination of world-class service, highly acclaimed cuisine, and live entertainment in an elegant yet energetic atmosphere. A truly unparalleled dining experience…”

Ed. Note: Yesterday we learned that Claudia’s Steakhouse was coming to the former American Express space at 15th and K St, NW.

It was almost exactly a year ago to the day that we first learned a PAUL Bakery would be coming to 13th and F St, NW near the National Press Building. Happy to see coming soon signage posted. A peek inside reveals a bit of buildout is still ongoing so it’s probably at least a month or two away but definitely getting close.

Lawsons-1

“Dear PoPville,

On my way out of the Metro this morning I noticed Lawsons (13th & G) is closed up, dark and empty. I just got a salad from them last week!”

A call to Lawsons reveals that they are only doing catering now and are based in Virginia. Hopefully another good lunch option takes over this space.

From a press release:

“The presence of D.C.’s most renowned political boss will once again impact this city when Boss Shepherd’s opens a block from the John A. Wilson (formerly the District) Building , at 13th & E Streets, NW, next to the Warner Theater, this July.

“We plan to bring a dynamic restaurant, filled with DC’s power players, to Penn Quarter this summer. There will be more sizzling than just the sidewalk this July,” revealed renowned DC restaurateur and founder, Paul J. Cohn.

Boss Shepherd’s takes a modern, fresh approach to traditional American dining, serving familiar comfort dishes with a distinctive and creative flair. Committed to a farm-to-table use of locally sourced ingredients, Executive Chef Jeremy Waybright offers fresh classics made from scratch. The new restaurant boasts diverse lunch and dinner menus that combine seasonal ingredients with bold flavors.

Patrons can expect a diverse cocktail, wine and local craft beer list comprised of many iconic labels from around the region. The beverage menu will boast specialty drinks including the Signature Boss Shepherd cocktail.

The new restaurant is named after DC’s original governor, often referred to as the Father of Modern Washington — one of the most powerful big-city bosses of his day, who was responsible for creating DC’s post-Civil War infrastructure. Thanks to the city improvements made by Boss Shepherd, the U.S. Congress was encouraged to remain in the District of Columbia, and our capital city became a vibrant, viable, and green city. A statue of Boss Shepherd, a native Washingtonian, can be seen from the restaurant, standing watch in front of the building that houses DC’s center of government.

The restaurant will offer lunch and dinner Monday – Friday, and dinner only on Saturday.”

Washington Business Journal reported:

“Gill has tapped former Sette Osteria and Cafe Milano chef Carmen Piazza as the restaurant’s executive chef. She will design a menu of “modern, Italian comfort food,” said Gill. The 6,000-square-foot restaurant will also include a 1,400-square-foot dance floor so the restaurant can transition into a lounge atmosphere on weekends.”

Opening June 7th:

Back in June M&S Grill closed “For a Remodel” at the corner of the 13th and F St, NW near the National Press Building. Washington Business Journal reports on the replacement:

“We now have the answer to what will fill the shuttered M&S Grill restaurant space at the corner of 13th and F streets NW: Mastro’s, an upscale steakhouse and seafood restaurant new to the Washington region.”

Former Filene’s space on Connecticut Avenue

On July 15th a reader told us it looked like someone was coming to fill the Filene’s space in Friendship Heights ( 5300 Wisconsin Ave, NW). Washington Business Journal found out who’s coming:

At Mazza Gallerie, a T.J. Maxx will move from next door to fill the vacant Filene’s storefront, according to permits issued in early July.”

and they also say the Filene’s space at the National Press Building (529 14th Street, NW) will be filled by a Marshalls. Still no word on who is coming to the 1133 Connecticut Ave, NW space pictured above. Stay tuned.

PJ Clarke’s Sidecar has just applied for a liquor license in the old Solives spot at 1600 K St, NW. The application says:

“Full service restaurant open for lunch and dinner. Sidecar, 86 seats & P. J. Clarke’s,
116 seats for total indoor capacity of 202. Sidewalk Café with 48 seats.”

I’m a little confused by the description. Is the Sidecar the bar?

Though I say the more sidewalk cafes the better.
