“Dear PoPville,

As seen at 1pm on Delafield and 8th st NW, this creature was NOT a cat without a tail and was trying to go up the stairs to houses.

Beaver with a fuzzy tail?
Honey badger misplaced?
Someone’s obese ferret escaped?

What is this?!”

According to my expertise, and obviously I had to post this video, it’s not a honey badger. (more…)

Thanks to Nora for sending:

“As predicted, the monarch butterflies are making their stopover in DC. Now I know what milkweed looks like when flowering.

I saw this one on 16th/Mass Ave NW by the Australian Embassy–and saw more on 16th/P and 17th/P–mesmerizing!”

Whoa, what’s happening – first an American Bittern in Eckington and now a Heron/Egret/Another American Bittern?!? Thanks to Janine for sending over the weekend:

“I spotted this guy last night on T between 17 and 18. He looks like some type of heron or egret, but likely juvenile because his feathers are sticking out. He was gone by this morning and I called City Wildlife. They asked if he was hurt (he doesn’t seem to be) and said they will keep an eye out for him. Hope he finds his way.”

Thanks to James for sending:

“No idea what this is, but I think it’s lost. Sitting on a fence in Eckington of all places, between 2nd St. NE and Seaton Pl. NE.”

Update: “it’s an American Bittern

“Look for American Bitterns in shallow freshwater marshes, typically toward the margins and among reeds and other vegetation; they are rarely out in the open.”
