Free Pancake Reminder – Line Up Starts at 6am Tues. Morning at IHOP

I’ll admit, I’m far more interested to see “Notable Pastry Chefs Sculpt Monument Out Of Pancakes”. Anyone already check out the IHOP at DC USA? If so how was the experience?

Free Flapjacks For First 1,500 Guests; Notable Pastry Chefs Sculpt Monument Out Of Pancakes; Live Entertainment Over 100 New Jobs, Continued Rebirth of Community

· The first 1,500 guests will be treated to (or receive a certificate for) a free short stack of IHOP’s famous buttermilk pancakes.

· Notable D.C. pastry chefs (Leslie Goldman-Poyourow of Fancy Cakes by Leslie and Randi Goldman of Creative Cakes, Inc.) will create an iconic replica of one of Washington’s most famous monuments using thousands of pancakes with the help of students from the culinary program at Bell Multicultural High School.

· Live entertainment (magician, clown, stilt walker, etc.) will entertain the crowds
· A contribution will be made to the Multicultural Career Intern Program (MCIP), the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that supports Bell Multicultural High School

WHY: IHOP is celebrating its leadership in sales and restaurant openings in the family dining category, has plans for additional growth, and wants to thank the community of Columbia Heights for its support.

The 5pm Post – Free Sierra Club Talk with Ian Woodall

“On Wednesday, September 22, from 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm Sierra Club presents Ian Woodall, a world famous mountain climber, who will speak on his life changing climbs to the top of Mount Everest in his talk entitled “The Tao of Everest.” His presentation will be held at Harriet’s Restaurant, 436 11th Street NW (near Metro Center and Archives stas.).

Between 1996 and 2007, Ian conceived, planned and led five expeditions to Mount Everest, reaching the summit on two occasions but also experiencing the death of fellow climbers along the way. He explores what these experiences mean to him in a presentation he calls the Tao of Everest.”

Free Empanadas on Friday!

Yesterday I wrote about a new gourmet empanada spot, Panas that soft opened in Dupont Circle at 2029 P St, NW. Just got an email saying you can sample the goods for free on Friday. They write:

“To mark the opening day owner Federico Garcia Lopez will offer one free empanada from 11 am until 1 pm.

Panas specializes in Latin fusion gourmet empanadas, the crescent-shaped turnovers, stuffed with a variety of well-seasoned meats, vegetables, spices, fruits, and sweets. Signature recipes are inspired by the Latin Fusion cuisine; a culinary concept that combines traditional and modern gastronomic techniques with different ingredients from across the Americas.

The 1,100 square-foot restaurant is tiny with just 13 seats and bright with a mustard colored wall highlighted with green field turf. Serving in-restaurant, carry-out and delivery the Panas menu includes $2 empanadas ranging from meat, pork, chicken and ham filled delicacies like the Chipotle Steak with shredded sirloin steak, onion and chipotle sauce to vegetarian selections like the Popeye with sautéed spinach, onions, raisins and goat cheese. Side salads with a Latin flair are also on the menu – the primavera with red pepper, corn, cilantro and black beans is a favorite as is the jicama salad with lettuce, mango and carrots.”

Warehouse Theater is holding its Second “Free-For-All” on Friday June 25th starting at 5pm

“ Warehouse Theater is holding its Second “Free-For-All” on Friday June 25th starting at 5pm. They are clearing out a lot of old restaurant equipment plus various odds and ends that have accumulated over the years. Most everything is free – save some of the bigger commercial kitchen items – and any money that they collect will be donated to the proposed Dupont Underground center for arts and architecture. More info here.”

Last time things went very quickly so if you’re interested I’d try to get there as close to 5pm as possible. Warehouse Theater can be reached through The Passenger bar at 1021 7th Street, NW by the Convention Center.
