Next Super Popular House History Workshops scheduled for Aug. 23

“The Humanities Council of Washington, D.C. (HCWDC) is pleased to announce the return of its popular House History workshops. They will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St. NW in the Washingtoniana Division (3rd Floor). Two workshop sessions will be held: Workshop I: 10:00 am – 1:30 pm and Workshop II: 12:30pm – 4:00 pm. Lunch will be provided for both sessions. These House History Workshops will guide community historians, of any skill or knowledge level, through the DC Public Library Washingtoniana Division’s collections. Participants will learn how to research the history of their own home or any other historical property.

These workshops will feature presentations by professionals who will guide workshop participants on how to navigate the collection of maps, building permits database, photo archives, microfilm records and the council’s DC Digital Museum.

The House history workshops provide residents with an opportunity to explore the history of their homes including the date the home was built, architect, builder, dates of any improvements, former residents, and how the neighborhood evolved over time. House history research is powerful because it provides that personal connection to the past that few other types of historical research can; it allows anyone to forge a strong sense of connection with their neighborhood and their community whether they have called DC home for years, or just moved in last month.

Pret A Manger Opens on Capitol Hill Friday, Get Free Food Thursday

Capital Bikeshare Members get a free Bowl at ShopHouse every Sunday in August

“Climate change means out summers are getting too hot. So let’s cool off. Next week, The Climate Reality Project is giving away free Ben & Jerry’s in DC (and in three other cities) to raise awareness for climate action.

From July 29-31, the EPA will hear from the public on the proposed Clean Power Plan – a rule that attempts to reduce carbon pollution from power plants. One of the hearings will be here in DC.

These ice cream trucks will not only be handing out free scoops, but also serve as climate action centers that will raise awareness and gather support for climate action and the proposed EPA rule.

Monday, July 28 from 11am-4pm at the Capital South Station
Monday, July 28 from 4-8pm at Union Station
Tuesday, July 29 from 8:30am-1pm at the EPA Headquarters (William Jefferson Clinton East Building, 1201 Constitution Ave, NW)

Free McDonald’s Coffee for two weeks Starting March 31st

“McCafé invites coffee drinkers in the Greater Washington DC area and across the U.S. to wake up and taste the free coffee. Beginning March 31, customers are encouraged to stop by their local participating McDonald’s restaurant for a freshly brewed small McCafé coffee during McDonald’s first-ever national Free Coffee Event. Free McCafé coffee is available during breakfast hours starting March 31 through April 13 in participating restaurants.

To kick off the two-week campaign, McDonald’s will host “Make Friends with McCafé” sampling events at high traffic locations and transportation hubs in multiple cities across the country.
