“Dear PoPville,

I am an essential worker hoping to purchase a semi-affordable and reliable bike for my eight mile commute. I am uncomfortable taking public transportation during this time and wanted to see if there were any open bike shops that you would recommend. Thank you so much!”

Fortunately Bike shops are considered essential businesses and have been allowed to stay open. I know my local shop Conte’s is open at 3426 Wisconsin Ave, NW. I got my daughter’s bike fixed there. Unfortunately the new bikes seem to be pretty pricey to me but maybe I’m just out of touch. Anyone have recs for where to get “semi-affordable and reliable bikes”?

Over the weekend we learned from Jose Andres’ ThinkFoodGroup:

“We will operate “Bodegas” out of our Beefsteak locations in Foggy Bottom and Dupont, adding an additional one at Jaleo DC on Monday.

These markets are intended to connect the community to staple items such as eggs, milk and flour along with household goods like cleaning solutions, paper towels and hand sanitizer, all of which have become scarce during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Beefsteak Bodega items, which will also include produce and fresh-cut vegetables, will be available for pick-up and delivery through our delivery partners from 11am to 5pm daily. Jaleo DC Bodega items will be available on the Jaleo website, for pick-up and through our delivery partners from 12pm to 8pm daily, beginning on Monday.

Thanks to Mark for sharing: “The Jaleo bodega.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

A mother duck made a nest in a planter outside of our office during the quarantine. Yesterday, 10 ducklings hatched. We were concerned about the duck family navigating through traffic to find water, so we contacted Duck Watch. (more…)

*This series will feature any pets in a backpack/bag. On metro, or not. Corgi, or not.

September 18th 2019 launched us into the wonderful world of corgis, and later other breeds/pets, hitching rides around town, often via public transit, in backpacks. Sadly, the series had become another victim of the coronaville shutdown. Not for the first time nor for the last, I hope, it’s Meatloaf to the rescue!!

“Meatloaf has been spotted working from home, he is very sad to not be on the actual Metro anymore, as evidenced by photo #2.” (more…)
