“Dear PoPville,
First, my sincere condolences to those who have experienced involuntary and unwelcome changes in their lives recently — the death of a loved one, sickness, the loss of a job, food insecurity, and more. Those changes are dreadful and extremely sad. I hope things get better soon for those who are hurting.
Second, this is sort of like a Friday question of the day. I’m curious to hear about people making voluntary positive changes as a result of the pandemic. When the current health crisis is deemed less urgent and stay at home orders have lifted, will readers be inspired to make some permanent changes in their lives? If so, what? (more…)

I know Union Station isn’t Orange/Yellow I just liked this photo by angela n.
From WMATA:
“Making the most of historically low ridership and traffic-free highways, Metro today announced plans to combine the schedules of its two biggest capital priorities in Virginia: rebuilding platforms and connecting the Silver Line to Metro’s existing network.
Under the expanded plan, Metro will combine this summer’s work demolishing and reconstructing platforms at four Orange Line stations with a separate project on the Silver Line to connect Metrorail to the new “phase II” stations, which are being constructed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).
The resulting summer shutdown will close a total of nine stations from Memorial Day weekend through the fall. (more…)

Ed. Note: From this morning’s poll only 2.3% of respondents are staying with extended family members.
“Dear PoPville,
When the current crisis started, I moved my mom, who’s in her 70s, out of her HiRISE condo in Virginia and in to my DC home temporarily. Mom likes her independence and her own space, so it’s been an adjustment having her live here. However, by now we have worked out the day to day routines. Most importantly, she is safe and comfortable, and does not have to risk exposure from other building residents or from heading out for groceries / errands during this pandemic. (more…)

I’ve spoke about this a bit @PoPville on twitter but want to do an official poll because I’m super curious:

From an email:
“Like many in the DC community, we are concerned about the health of our essential workers and at-risk populations due to the spread of COVID-19. We also recognize that this is a challenging time for local businesses that are under pressure due to the stay-at-home order. So, in an effort to get quality, cloth face masks at no cost to local hospitals, community organizations, and other locations where they are needed most, while also channeling needed capital into the local economy, we are engaging stewards and community leaders within the DC business community to supply this critical demand.

“Dear PoPville,
I am a first responder directly supporting our nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I work 12-14 hour shifts, including overnights and on weekends and holidays, which leaves me precious little time to go shopping and run errands. The recent reduction in the opening hours of many grocery and big box stores has only exacerbated this situation for healthcare workers, first responders, emergency managers and other essential personnel like me. TLDR: Runners do or do not have to wear masks? How about for pedestrians? Cyclists?
“Dear PoPville,
I can’t tell if I am being petty or if my anger is justified. I have seen a shit load of runners without masks .. i saw a runner a while back who had a mask in her hand & that makes sense to me.
I don’t think I’d want to run with a mask on the whole time ..
But if a runner passes me going in the same or the opposite direction I think they damned well better get out of my masked way. I am coming close to screaming at the next maskless runner I see.
The first runner I passed did get off the sidewalk & ran around a car or two. So there are some considerate runners.”
