9th and N Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Have you heard anything about the Union Kitchen on 9th and N St NW? I walked by yesterday (1/9) and it’s completely papered over and dark inside. I didn’t see any signage indicating a closure or remodel.

I live right around the corner and love their breakfast bar so hoping they aren’t going anywhere!”

Update from Union Kitchen: “Hi! We’re undergoing some renovations. Reopening tomorrow and excited to welcome you back!”

From the Mayor’s Office yesterday:

“Mayor Muriel Bowser celebrated the reopening of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and joined Events DC in announcing the addition of two locally-owned vendors inside the Convention Center, Ben’s Chili Bowl and Shop Made in DC.

“We have been inviting people to come back and experience DC, and it is always important to us that visitors are able to experience the real DC. It doesn’t get more DC than Ben’s Chili Bowl or a whole shop filled with items made by DC creatives,” said Mayor Bowser. “Spread the word: DC is open and so is our Convention Center.”

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center opens ahead of two major conventions, Otakon and Awesome Con. (more…)

Thanks to Kanga for sending: “Thought you’d like to see this- outside the convention center on 9th and L, giving out free joints for people that got vaccinated!”

The DCMJ website says:

“From free joints at dispensaries to free bags of weed outside vaccination centers, across the United States cannabis reform advocates are stepping up to organize their own cannabis giveaways to help end the coronavirus pandemic. (more…)

At long last!! Pearl’s Bagels is nearly here (on 7th Street across the street from the Convention Center near the original Passenger location.)

From the owners:

“The day has finally come and we’re going to open this Saturday!

For now, we’ll be doing contactless takeout via online pre-order (the day before) only. Once we get a handle on how many bagels to make any given day, we’ll switch to day-of ordering and ramp up to making all the sandwiches we’ve been planning over the past year. We’ll be selling assorted bagels by the half-dozen, tubs of various cream cheeses, plus “Nana’s Hot Jalapeno Spread” — Allee’s (my wife and business partner) grandmother’s specialty that’s similar to pimento cheese, but hotter and better (in our humble opinion).

We’ll also be selling two build-your-own-sandwich kits. The “Lox Box” will feature Ivy City Smokehouse novalox, Little Wild Things microgreens, capers, pickled red onions, a tomato, and cream cheese; and the “BEC Box” which will include Epic Curing bacon, a half-dozen cage-free eggs, sliced cheddar cheese and a little jar of ketchup. 1120 9th Street, NW

Tom’s Chinese Laundry was located here for, approximately, forever. Their yelp reviews were through the roof positive. Truly the end of an era.

They stayed open when they were surrounded by boarded up buildings for years. Updates when we learn what becomes of the space. When I peaked in the door it was getting completely gutted. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

Do you know what’s going on with Chatman’s D’Vine Bakery on 9th street by the Convention Center? It seems to be pretty much always closed recently, except for a few rare and random times when I’ve seen someone in there behind the counter. Are they going out of business?”

I’m happy to report that I had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich on Saturday afternoon. Though in hindsight I probably should have taken advantage of the breakfast all day on Saturday:

I asked the guy working the counter if they were reducing hours at all and he looked at me like I was crazy. According to him they are business as usual with regular hours. Has anyone else noticed if their hours have been irregular?

And perhaps more importantly, do they have the best sweet potato pie?
