Sasha sends from Franklin Square.

I’d like to take the opportunity to announce the formation of the Friends of the White Whale Society (FOTWWS). It took a while navigating the nonprofit bureaucracy but we are now official. Basically we take a lot of photos of white squirrels and other urban wildlife exotica. Join us!!

OK, the White Whale(s) is no stranger to the pages of PoPville but there has been an explosion of sightings this summer. I am grateful to all who sent in samples. Without further ado, I give you, not including the ones we’ve already posted this summer, the White Whale, summer 2018: (more…)

Thanks to DM for sending from 7th and Randolph Street, NW. Awesome.

UPDATE from the Humane Rescue Alliance:

“After receiving an anonymous tip of a large reptile animal living in a DC residence, the Humane Rescue Alliance, in partnership with DC Health, worked with the DC Office of the Attorney General to obtain a search warrant.

HRA’s Field Services Division, with support from the Washington Metropolitan Police Dept., executed the search warrant Wednesday afternoon, seizing an illegal 5-foot caiman from the premises in SE DC. The caiman was being housed illegally, in inhumane conditions, in the basement of the residence.

During the execution of the search warrant, HRA officers observed conditions and paraphernalia associated with organized dog fighting. A second search warrant was issued by a Superior Court Judge Thursday morning. (more…)

Been getting tons of messages (thanks to all who’ve sent) from folks spotting White Whales – thanks to Judith for sending these – they’re multiplying:

“Both spotted near the mall at 3rd & Madison NW and along the outside of the NGA West Building. They are two separate squirrels!”

Thanks to Elle for depressing me on this fine summer day. And now you too shall share in our grief, I’m afraid. From the Washington Post:

“Federal workers cared for a mother duck before rats devoured her nest. Then this lone duckling hatched.”

Obviously it’s nice the lone duckling was saved but having read the full post story I feel awful. God damn it I need a hug. Or a trip to The Pug.

Thanks to S. for sending:

“Saw a wild turkey on Pennsylvannia Ave this morning (surely there’s a great pun somewhere in there?!)….next to the Salvation Army building….actually my beagle spied it first!”
