Whoa, what’s happening – first an American Bittern in Eckington and now a Heron/Egret/Another American Bittern?!? Thanks to Janine for sending over the weekend:

“I spotted this guy last night on T between 17 and 18. He looks like some type of heron or egret, but likely juvenile because his feathers are sticking out. He was gone by this morning and I called City Wildlife. They asked if he was hurt (he doesn’t seem to be) and said they will keep an eye out for him. Hope he finds his way.”

“No idea what this is, but I think it’s lost. Sitting on a fence in Eckington of all places, between 2nd St. NE and Seaton Pl. NE.”

Update: “it’s an American Bittern

“Look for American Bitterns in shallow freshwater marshes, typically toward the margins and among reeds and other vegetation; they are rarely out in the open.”

“Riding by the Botanic Garden, I saw this hawk a few feet away having just caught a huge rat for dinner. Then it flew up into the tree and I took a few photos. Maybe not the best shot but pretty cool as my first up close hawk sighting!”

Photos by Randy Loftus

Thanks to Randy for sending these fantastic shots:

“This was my morning’s beautiful ‘wake up call ‘ …a red-shouldered hawk vocalizing outside my window in a tall poplar tree. They are known to be quite loud and it did it’s job! (I got up and grabbed my camera!)”

Not quite a possum in a liquor store but still…

In case you live in a cave or were kicked off twitter – this is surely the greatest post from the National Mall and Memorial Parks, from Sunday:

“Look who decided to take a ride on the bus! Take the DC Circulator National Mall Route around National Mall and Memorial Parks. It’s only a dollar! Spotting wildlife is not guaranteed…”

hahaha thanks to my neighbor for sending this meta photo of me photographing a hawk on our street. This is from North Cleveland Park and that is my daughter’s hot pink back back but she lets me borrow it from time to time.
