“M/New Hampshire NW above Rasika West End”

“Dear PoPville,

It would be nice if the building management or the person responsible for this cleaned up the sidewalk. We only noticed because our pups stopped walking with all the glass.” (more…)

Thanks to Justin for sending Sunday: “Does anyone have any idea why Roosevelt Island is closed today?”

Megan replied: “Park Service site says “wildlife management” – apparently they have a bear?”

NPS alerts say: “Theodore Roosevelt Island Closed on 6/18/2023 for Wildlife Management
Alert, Severity, closure, Theodore Roosevelt Island Closed on 6/18/2023 for Wildlife Management

“Dear PoPville,

As seen in Capitol Hill. Trays of beans on an electric scooter.

Curious if anyone has any context.”

I mean obviously…

sd reports: “Huge blast on Corcoran between 18th and 19th this morning at 9:00am. Still not sure what happened, but police are here now sorting through it.”

Update from another reader: “I talked to the parking enforcement person who was outside when it happened. A driver hit two parked cars then stopped and set off a firework and then drove off. From the sound, we were all guessing it was an M80. Thankfully no one was hurt.”

Not that these things work anyway, but what in the hell are they supposed to be protecting? The sewer? The curb? The sidewalk?!? Skinniest bike lane of all time?

Update from a reader: “The flex posts are called daylighting an intersection. It makes it easier for drivers to see pedestrians crossing the sidewalk when cars aren’t parked close to it. These concrete or flex post bulb outs are all over the city! Once you start looking for them, you’ll see them everywhere.” (more…)

Readers reported around 3:15pm: “at Rock Creek Park and just heard very heavy boom in the distance almost like a sonic boom.”

“anyone else in Arlington (south of Clarendon) hear a massive boom about 10 minutes ago?”

From US Capitol Police: “This afternoon, our officials were working closely with our federal partners to monitor an unresponsive pilot who was flying an airplane near the National Capital Region. The U.S. Capitol Complex was briefly placed on an elevated alert until the airplane left the area.”

Ed. Note: Possibly related to the 11:15am Navy Flyover at Arlington National Cemetery? Thanks to Renee for sending a photo of it:

J. reports around 11am: “In case people were wondering what the bangs at Navy Yard were. It was the navy seemingly firing a cannon this morning. Fortunately they waited to do it until I passed by in my kayak heading to Navy Yard.”

“Dear PoPville,

Any clue what was going on? Saw these knights on Sunday walking down military in front of St. John’s College High School maybe heading to rock creek?”
