From Children’s National Hospital:

“Even as coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads across the United States and globally, the need for blood donations remains. Blood drives and blood donor appointments are being cancelled at a high rate due to the effect of people staying home and social distancing. The lack of blood donations will cause the nation’s blood supply to decrease.

Blood donation is safe. The blood collectors check the health of all donors before they are allowed to donate. Individuals are not at risk of contracting COVID-19 through the blood donation process or via a blood transfusion, since respiratory viruses are generally not known to be transmitted by donation or transfusion.

Please consider donating blood to your local blood donor center. Children’s National Hospital has its own Blood Donor Center and appointments can be made here.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“As the District continues responding to and working to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), Mayor Muriel Bowser is encouraging volunteers to join the DC Medical Reserve Corps (DC MRC). The DC MRC is housed in the DC Department of Health (DC Health) and supports public health and medical emergency preparedness, response, and recovery by recruiting, training, and deploying medical and non-medical volunteers to assist with planned events and emergencies. Volunteers can complete the online registration HERE.

“As the coronavirus continues to impact the District of Columbia, the nation, and the world, we are asking volunteers to join the DC Medical Reserve Corps to assist in our response,” said Mayor Bowser. “We know our residents look out for their neighbors, and this emergency is no different. The DC Medical Reserve Corps needs volunteers – especially those with medical experience – to sign up today.”

“Dear PoPville,

Come join your fellow DC residents in an evening of service to this city’s homeless and hungry, and have a great time too!

DC homeless center Charlie’s Place is providing a Christmas dinner for the homeless on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. We need volunteers help prepare and/or serve the meal, set-up the space and clean up afterward – you’re welcome to participate in whatever you can make time for. We work to provide a welcoming and festive atmosphere for both our clients and volunteers each Christmas, and this year we’ll also have St. Margaret’s Choir singing Christmas carols during the dinner. “Dear PoPville,

Its that time of year again! We are collecting handmade holiday cards for the residents of the Old Soldiers Home/ Armed Forces Retirement home here in DC. If you know an adult, office, child, daycare, or school that would be interested in making holiday cards to bring some joy to these individuals who have spent years or a lifetime in service to all of us, please spread the word and help us hand out a card to every retired soldier we can this holiday season. Last year we handed out over 600 hugely appreciated holiday cards from all over the country. The cards are delivered along with some hugs, singing and lots of holiday cheer. Read More
