“Stop by today’s market for some EXCITING new vendors! The immensely popular local entrepreneurs from Pleasant Pops will be at the market offering their delicious line-up of custom-made Popsicles! You may also notice a new delicious aroma when you swing by with the addition an on-site barbecue smoker serving fresh ribs! You may have also noticed that the market recently began selling fresh eggs from Waterview Foods!”

The Petworth Market is located on 9th St, NW off Georgia Ave (between Taylor and Upshur) and runs every Friday from 3-7pm.

“Dear PoP,

A couple of neighbors in Petworth are organizing to maintain the median in New Hampshire Ave (remove weeds) this Saturday from 8:00am to 11:00pm. There was the one event for planting where at least 8 people participated. Now the problem has become weeds. We have been trying to tackle this but between 3 people alone it seems like a loosing battle. Do you think you could post some announcement to see if we can get any other neighbors to help/volunteer this Saturday. We will meet at 8:00am at the 3900 block of New Hampshire.”

From a Yachad press release:

On Friday, July 9th at 5 p.m., Washington, DC housing and community development organization Yachad celebrated the work of its teenage volunteers, who helped make a Northeast Housing Coop more accessible to people with disabilities. Beginning and finishing work during the sweltering heat wave that hit our area this month, a group of local teens built a professionally-designed accessibility ramp for the 2nd Street Coop on 5744 2nd St., NE, Washington, DC.

Yachad’s “Ramp it Up!” program paired these high school students with professional carpenters. The ramp they finished makes four to six coop units accessible in the previously inaccessible fifty-two unit housing complex. By mobilizing skilled and unskilled volunteers and empowering homeowners with skills and education, Yachad works to repair the homes and communities of low-income homeowners to ensure that Washington, DC can remain a diverse city.

Now that the ramp is completed, Yachad will continue working with volunteers to make key renovations to the bathrooms, kitchens, and doorways of several of the ground floor apartment units.

Mad props to the volunteers for braving the weather (rain Sat., heat Sun.) and totally hooking up the median on the 3900 block of NH Ave, NW. When I came home from my walks I had to do a double take. After chatting with some of the volunteers on Sun. I learned that the area will mature and grow over a 3-5 year period. It’s hard to capture how great it already looks in the photos but this’ll give you a little idea.

More photos after the jump (including a before photo). (more…)

Thanks to Jeff on 8th for sending in details and images of what’s going on with the New Hampshire Ave, NW medians. He writes:

“In the 3700 block, the median will be tilled and mulched. This is due to the foot traffic caused by people not crossing at the cross walks (aka jaywalking). Which resulted in the sod being killed. Also, DDOT/UFA is looking into options to reduce jaywalking in the 3700 block but as of right now a solution hasn’t be selected.

In the 3800 block, the median will be tilled by DDOT/UFA, and will be mulched on July 10 with mulch donated by Tom Carter from Terra, Inc ( which is based in Petworth). If and when we are able identify additional funding and community support, we will also plant this median and any other median from Georgia Ave to Grant Circle.

In the 3900 block, the median will be mulched (again with mulch donated by Tom Carter from Terra, Inc) and planted with flowers via a grant from ANC 4C on July 10. Volunteers are still needed for the planting.

If anyone wishes to volunteer please email us at [email protected].”

Thanks to twitter user chelseydc for the heads up about this great event, August 21st.

“Beautification Day will be held this year on Saturday, August 21st, 2010, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This annual event was established in 2005 as a citywide “spruce up” of all DC public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school. Beautification efforts will include landscaping, trash pick-up, light painting, planting flowers, and other external beautification efforts. Volunteers and supplies are needed at over 100 schools.”

“Dear PoP,

The Environmentors program pairs DC high school students with mentors to select and answer an environmental question using the scientific method and the hard work culminates in an annual fair.  Topics vary: ecology of the Anacostia River, green building solutions, air pollution, and more.  First, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes, plus special category awards go to the best projects.  Winners move onto a national competition.  Winnings go toward college expenses.  An impressive 95% of the students who get as far as the fair go on to college.  No arguing with those numbers – it’s good stuff.

Be a part of it and see another slice of DC by providing your time for 2 hours on May 12th (1:45 – 3:45).  We will train you and you will evaluate 3-5 projects.  No science Phd’s needed.  Evaluations involve talking to the students for 5-10 minutes about their project and then rating them on a handful of categories.  Multiple judges evaluate each student’s project, so you won’t be solely responsible for dashing any budding scientists’ dreams.  It will all take place at the super cool School Without Walls, downtown (2130 G St. NW).”

“Dear PoP,

Can you post a request for residents on or near New Hampshire Ave with the new median trees to sign up as a DC Treekeeper? We need folks to sign up, get a watering device and agree to help keep the tree watered and healthy.

Thanks to all for sending word of Greater Greater Washington’s initiative. They write:

“Greater Greater Washington is organizing community shovel brigades to clear out bus stops tomorrow (Sunday). Right now there are meet-ups organized for Dupont (Q Street Metro entrance) and Columbia Heights (Metro entrance by Five Guys) at 3:00 PM Sunday.

Please help spread the word – there are way too many dangerous bus stops out there!”

From Neal Becton of Som Records:

“Neal Becton is calling all shovelers to come down to the Black Cat today and help us dig out some more space in front of the club so we can have a dealer unloading area for the record fair tomorrow. Merci!

Right now there are two four foot wide paths from the sidewalk to the Cat. In the next few hours (and once some customers leave the shop) I’m going to hollow out one or two more. Would love a little help so we could clear the whole thing.”
