Artist’s Talk | Depicted/Connected: Paintings by Tim Okamura:

“Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery
1632 U Street, NW
October 17 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Free

Join us on Thursday, October 17th at 6:30pm as Tim Okamura visits from New York to discuss his latest portrait series and how he came to know DC through his subjects and creative process!

Once referred to as the “Caravaggio of our time,” Okamura expertly blends seemingly disparate styles – Baroque, Realism, and Graffiti – to create striking portraits capturing the raw energy of urban culture while evoking the ageless allure of storytelling. Coupling his subject’s dramatic, Baroque lighting with the edgy Graffiti-laden architectural backdrops he infuses each work with a gripping dynamism and masterfully blurs the line between the individual and their environment, with the end effect being the city and citizen becoming one. Okamura describes his experience coming to know D.C. through the stories of these women and unexpectedly the broader connection their narratives revealed: “The women in these paintings are depicted as seen through my self-constructed lens – one that has formed over time through my life-long fascination with the emotionally expressive power of the human face … I have sought to celebrate these women as individuals, connected to their environment, but also to discover through them metaphors for greater aspects of the human condition – connected to all of us.”

DCJCC LitFest: Jeremy Dauber The Worlds of Sholem Aleichem: The Remarkable Life and Afterlife of the Man Who Created Tevye:

“Washington District of Columbia Jewish Community Center
1529 16th Street NW
October 9 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
Free

Novelist and playwright Sholem Aleichem was a founding giant of modern Yiddish literature. His memorable characters, which include Fiddler’s “Tevye the Dairyman,” offer a window onto late 19th century Eastern European Jewish life. But Sholem Aleichem’s own life story, complete with dramatic reversals of fortune, is just as compelling.

The Bernard Wexler Fund for Jewish History, established in 1996, supports an annual lecture that brings outstanding speakers, scholarly research and contemporary issues to the forefront of learning at the DCJCC.”
